SOURCE: 75 mercury boat motor not turning over
you have one of two problemsyour starter brushes are sticking or your solenoid is going bad next timme it happens take a hammer and lightly tap the starter if it turns over your starter is going bad if you try this repeatly and nothing then you have a bad solenoid they are not expensive if you do not want to tap the starter then just replace the solenoid the best way to find it is follow your main battery line to motor where it stops and breaks with two posts and then the hot goes to the sarter take a picture of it so if you need to take it with you u acn see where the wires go oriellys probally will have it is round and you battery will go to one post and the hot to the starter will go to the other there will be to little posts on it as well one to the key switch and the other is a groud
SOURCE: yamaha 1998 25 hp 3 cylinder outboard pistons hitting spark plug
This must have the wrong plugs in the motor. The gap between the top of the piston and the plug is about 8-10 mm.No motor will run with any bearing that is that worn. You said you looked at the top of the piston. With the head off,did you check how far the spark plug extended through. The reason being,is that it should not protrude all the way into the combustion chamber. It must have the wrong length plugs in it.If it runs well, you have the heat right.Mate.Hope this helps
SOURCE: how to clean boat carburetor
Carburetors are tricky, They have to be completely dismantled, soaked in carb cleaner, make sure all the gunk is off, every jet clean and clear, If you can't get a wire through it, you won't get gas through it, make sure you can blow through it, Get some guitar strings, .009 is about the smallest guitar string you will find, you can buy them separately at the music store if you don't have one. Change the filter in the line, when the carbs go back on, the adj all have to be the same, not one wide open and 2 idleing, Float level is also important, they don't sell complete kits anymore, you have to buy the parts individually, gaskets , etc, good luck.
SOURCE: Boat does not plane
you could try a lower pitched prop.2" would up the revs by 400 revs.,which would up the revs ,but give you more low down thrust,and/or tucking the motor under more[if you have electric trim/tilt].thats a big boat and fair bit of weight for a 40hp..my 40hp merc is on a 13ft saracen, and with two of us it takes a while to get gooing.so i bought a ProPulse prop, with adjustable pitch.been god to try different pitches
