I could be off on this one, Ladonna, but it sounds like a mutation of
MS Antivirus,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_AntivirusA 'scareware rogue anti-virus'.
I ran into a mutation of this 'creature' back in 2005, with my niece's computer.
(As you can read in the article, MS Antivirus has been out for quite some time. It has changed names through the years, or mutated, but is still the same Ol' piece of
[email protected])
Administrative privileges were lost. (You, as the owner of the laptop are the Administrator)
No getting into Control Panel, Task Manager, Administrative tasks, and the internet.
Why? MS Antivirus doesn't want you to remove it.
I used the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, from CNET.com
(Sounds like I am advertising, but I'm not. The program is free, and no junk attached )
I downloaded it to my computer, and burned it to a CD disk. Then installed the CD disk, in my nieces computer's optical drive.
I then installed it, and turned it on.
Pop-up, after pop-up, after pop-up, appeared. So many in fact, that I couldn't see the Malwarebytes screen. Didn't know if it was running, or not.
DO NOT click on the pop-ups. It will just slow Malwarebytes down.
(Some pop-ups have fake Windows 'shields', some are real Windows 'shields'. Clicking on the real ones does no good either! Lol!)
Average time for Malwarebytes to complete, is around 42 minutes, the first time. (Full scan)
Just depends on how large the harddrive is, and how much stuff you have on it.
You aren't done yet.
System Restore also restores those 'virus' files.
You have to turn System Restore off, then run Malwarebytes one more time. Then turn System Restore back on, and create a restore point.
Now you're good to go.
(2012, and she hasn't had a problem yet)
Need guidance in downloading, installing, and running Malwarebytes, post back in a Comment.
I use it everyday.
If you also need guidance in going to System Restore, turning it off, and back on, post in a Comment.
(I also use CCleaner daily. A free registry cleaner. Can guide you with this also)
