I have a GE brand air conditioner (model ASH08FCS1). It was working perfectly for some time, but it all of a sudden stopped working. The only thing it does is beep when I plug it back in after unplugging it, or if I bump the cord. It won't turn on, display anything, etc. HELP!

This should be a "trouble code". In the owners manual or installation manual you should find a list of trouble codes that help us determine what may be the lead malfunction.
i doubt the freon would be gone its a sealed system unless someone was pokin the coils kids love to bend the fins for some reason could need a capacitor is the compressor starting ? humming ?running
it sounds like either the start components for the compressor have failed or the compressor itself has failed, since it is not kicking the breaker I would lean towards start components.if it is a PSC only comprssor, you may be able to add a start assist to get the compressor started. I assume that since it is 8000 btu it is 110VAC you can probably get a generic start kit at your local appliance parts house. they have a diagram and are fairly easy to install, just be aware that the capacitor storea charge on the OFF cycle, and can be dangerous
Things that are not broken: The big relay that powers the compressor often hums or buzzes when the unit is running. Several brands of heat pumps keep their reversing valve "on" any time the thermostat is set for "cool". They buzz, too.
If something really is loose, the only way to fix it is to look at the machine and take off panels until you find what is buzzing.
