When I hit scan, the window says "NO scan options. Refer to device documentation to troubleshoot." Any ideas where that came from? Thanks, everybody.
Try this: Uninstall all software and drivers for printer. Unplug the USB cable from computer. Reboot the computer twice with the printer still unplugged. After the second boot, Reinstall the software/drivers. Don't plug the printer in just yet, the software install will tell you when. After the printer and software/drivers are all in. Reboot the computer once more. Hopefully this will clear things up. Let me know, I like to keep track of my solutions so I can serve people better with there problems.

I could not get my scanner to work either. i called HP and they said i had a bad printer and suggested I get a new one (BS!) so I toyed around alittle and figured out how to get it to scan. I opened up explorer and typed in http://(ip adress of the printer) and it works fine like that. I don't know how to get it to reconize my computer. I have uninstalled and installed over and over again and it still doesnt reconize my computer (XP not Vista).
hope that helps

I had/have a similar problem - the scanner doesn't work from the printer panel, but does work when requested from HP Image Zone software. Thanks for that clue.
However, I cannot scan 35 mm slides. The scanner whirs for a few moments then locks up totally. It gives an error - "Cancelling..." I can't even shut the machine off; I have to unplug it.
Any ideas?

Don't use the registryfix ad that is on the righthand side of this page, it ruined my pc. the error message is a pain in the arse and i have it right now.....i uninstalled months ago due to it and here it is again.... i can scan thru the computer and the pc says the hp scanner is fine, no solution yet for this girl, who knows how much real living has been lost to computers and their b.s., God will be chiding us in Heaven i bet.

I scanned through the computer (versus the on-printer control panel) and it worked fine. I.e. go to HP Image Zone software on the computer and select scan. It worked fine.

If VISTA is in the mix, the problem is that you cannot set a scan destination. To fix, I climbed onto Photoshop (any image editor should work) and PULLED a scan from the HP printer which caused the printer to set the SCAN directory destination and now it works fine (i.e. normally). LOTS of apps have such bizarre first time use problems in Vista where you have to go to extraordinary lengths to configure something teh first time. Example" Sony Acid Pro, Soundforge, and CD Architect.

You forgot about the one handed hand stand with your back to the north/north west on a Tuesday after work! I'm here because I get the same error message "sometimes" and it is certainly not going to help to undo everything and redo them. That's may be a simple formula to hand out to people if you don't understand anything about TCP/IP and client/server functions but it's a huge hassle and rather unlikely to make things more stable. I'll keep looking, but I won't be uninstalling the entire software package unless I know exactly how to install it better the next time around.
