During the summer of 2006 our refrigerator stopped working on and off. It made a loud humming noise ending with a loud clunking noise and shut down. We had a repair man come out and he told us that the freezer coil was going bad and it would cost too much to replace it. He also mentioned that we should start looking for a new frig. He showed by husband the coil that was frozen at the top but as you looked downward it was not frozen. While we still have the frig, it continues to make this horrid sound on and off. We are now in the summer of 2007 and are afraid that it will stop working again because of the warmer temps. It is still very nice. We purchased it in 2004 and would like to sell it in order to buy a new one but we want to make and effort to repair it. Do you have any suggestions? Karen
Karen Most likely the problem with you fridge is a bad compressor. The compressor is a part of the cooling (professionally called "sealed") system which included also the evaporator coil (the part your "repair man" called freezer coil), Freon and all tubing. This sealed system has FIVE years manufacturer warranty. You do not have to by a new fridge. Just call Maytag and they must fix it free of charge to you. Even if you do not have prove of purchase Maytag will go by the manufacturing date coded on the serial number. Good luck. Gendos. post back...
