Just freeze the bowl, add the ingredients for your favorite recipe & dasher, put on the top and turn it on.

when bringing the mixture to the refrigerator must be the two buttons on? (The mix button and frozen)?

I had the same problem. Dont try and force it. You will break the dasher. Put in just enough ice and salt to stabalize your canister, then add your ingredients and turn on machine. Then finish adding ice and salt around the sides. This will keep the machine moving so the inredients won't freeze so fast.
