We dropped our camera!

Thats right. We have a Canon PowerShot A85 and it worked GREAT...until we dropped it on concrete. It wont turn on. We tried putting in different batteries; we took out the memory card and tried again; and we also probably pressed EVERY button on this camera... at least once! Even plugging it into the computer didn't help. It's out of warranty now... and we're away from home on vacation right now...so any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

On our A85, after the drop, the camera was able to 'power on' intermittently.  Eventually, it would not power on at all.
After reading the above suggestion about checking the battery contacts, I noticed the baterries were NOT all at the same height while in the camera.  What had happened was that the battery contacts in the bottom of the battery compartment were not at the same height.  Two of these metal contact 'fins' were bent down and not at the correct 45 degree angle [they were flatter].  I took a very small screwdriver and bent them back up into their original positions, thus allowing all the bateries to have a better contact [more pressure on the + and - ends] with the batteries.

Something is obviously broken inside. You could try the battery compartment- to make sure the batteries are making contact. Try switching it on while pressing the battery compartment door in so that it makes contact Try pressing the casing around the areas of the button and at the base of the Coreen- this is where the various connectors are located. But that is about all you can do These items are not repairable economically- best just to purchase the next camera.

Hi,
It is known problem of ccd imager chip failure in Canon A85 camera and ccd imager chip will be replaced by local camera repair shop to solve this issue.
Since camera wont show live view/ blank screen so same gets saved as picture in memory card that is why no picture/ image in playback either.
Hope these info will help you.
Thanks.

PowerShot A85 Digital Camera: when I connect my camera (canon powershot a85) to ...

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use iPhoto or any other photo cataloging program.
