W7 First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

Click "Start" button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the "Search" bar and press "Enter". Click "Continue" if necessary.

In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Laptop not recognizing device when plugged into laptop how to fix

The computer is not recognizing the device because the appropriate software or driver is not installed on the device.

Most of the time when you connect a smartphone into a compatible laptop the device drivers or software automatically install, so the laptop may recognize the smartphone.

Here are some possibilities as to why the device is not recognized.

1) The USB port is bad.
2) The USB port is not activated
3) One of the devices does not support the other

Here are a few possible troubleshooting solutions:

1) Go to the smartphone manufactures website and download and install the updated device driver and software then plug in the device to see if it is recognized.
2) (if Windows OS) Go to the Device Manager to see if the device is showing up when it's plugged in. If you see the device in device manager right click the device and choose to update the driver.
3) (if Windows OS) Additionally, in device manager you can check your device's USB ports to see if there is an issue with the ports that may be resulting in the smartphone not being recognized. You can choose to re-enable the USB ports or update the software for the USB ports.

Hopes that helps resolve your issues.

My usb ports on my laptop only recognizes my phone and mp3 player and not my external hdd, it tells me to format the plug and play external hdd. It does not do this in all my usb ports though

Maybe the external hard drive is to large to be recognized by your computer. Some computers won't recognize real large external drives.

Another problem could be that your external hard drive does not support Windows 7.

Please check this, Go to My Computer and right click. Select manage from the menu. Select device manager on the left hand side and see if there are any ! of any kind that may show missing drivers. If this is the case you may need to go to HP's website and download drivers for your hp mini.

Dell 6420 laptop not recognizing USB ports while on docking station

Hello Jackie.

2 of youre USBs are USB 3. so you need to install the right drivers for USB 3.
Also you should check youre BIOS settings, if there is an option to enable "XHCI" support so enable it. (USB 3 needs this to work ).

Laptop will no longer recognize

Test to see if the computer sees another USB device like a keyboard, if it does, this means your USB port is working.
Plug the device into another computer, even go to a computer sales store and plug it into one there to see if it works. if it does not work, the KP25B is dead and needs to be replaced. if it does recognize it, then use a different USB port on the computer.

USB ports wont recognize anything I plug in

Are you using XP? If so:
Here is what you can do to refresh the USB ports:
1. Right click MY COMPUTER
2. Select PROPERTIES
3. Select HARDWARE
4. Select DEVICE MANAGER
5. Select UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS
6. Right click on each USB CONTROLLER and select Uninstall
7. Uninstall all entries
8. Reboot your computer
9. As your computer re-boots it will reinstall all USB connections it detects
THEN, when all other USB items have been configured and connected by the system, you then should try connecting your USB device.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Thinkpad T20 won't recognize usb port

You can get a PCMCIA adapter with 4 USB v.2.0 slots on eBay. It requires power from the USB port on the laptop, but the pigtail connector is included. Works like a charm! Comes from China just like everything else in this country.

Usb ports

You'll want to verify your computer recognizes your usb ports.
In device manager, look to see that you don't have anything with an exclamation mark, question mark, or red X on it. Make sure you have the usb ports listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers. If nothing shows, your usb ports may be dead. Depends on the age of your computer and what might have happened to them.

Device manager- right-click My Computer and go to properties, then select the hardware tab.
