The convergence on my JVC AV-48WP30 always needs adjusting. After powering on and waiting 5 min or so, I will adjust it the best that I can. All 9 positions can be adjusted, mostly. The Red gun in position 9 is a bit rotated clockwise so never gets totally to white in that position. After powered on for a while I see the color separation and have to adjust it again. This happens every 30 - 60 minutes. The TV is almost 5 years old. I have electronics training but would rather not do any soldering. What might the problem be and is there anything that I can do to lessen the amount of adjustments that are needed. Thanks.
This sounds to me as if you have a defective convergence output IC, whose gain is now sensitive to heat. As the IC gets warm, the gain changes and you see the colors separate. If you do not want to do any soldering then have the IC replaced by someone with experience in convergence circuits.
Remove the back of the set and look for 2 large black IC's on a large heat sink. The IC's are probably STK392-110, and if you are going to replace one then you might as well go ahead and replace both, but use the improved STK392-150 IC's. With the set unplugged, unsolder the IC's, unscrew them and remove them and clean off the old heat sink compound from the heat sink. Apply fresh heat sink compound to the new IC's, screw them in place and solder the pins. You should then do the convergence alignment and your picture should be fine.

Thanks Mike for the solution. I may try to do the replacement. Could you send whatever info I might need to complete the replacement? Which IC and the acutal proceedure? Thanks again.
