Question about Canon PowerShot SD600 Digital Camera
I have a new sd600 camera and I have consistently had trouble downloading images to my DELL PC laptop (I have windows xp). There seems to be a problem with detecting the connecting to the computer through the usb port but I knwo that I didn't need to download any usb drivers since I have windows xp. I was only able to download pics one time and that was after I continuously tried opening the camera window and unplugging and replugging the usb cable into the computer. Now I can't download pictures at all, and for some reason every time I plug the camera into the computer with the cable, adobe photoshop opens up instead of the camera window and it can't detect the camera. I have tried opening the camera window manually and it either doesn't open or it gives me a message saying the device is not connecting. I have tried everything from uninstalling to reinstalling the software and it still doesn't work. Any ideas?
Did you checked that your existing camera's drivers are supported the Win Xp OS ?

Hmmm... Yea sometimes the pc doesn't see the added gizmo your camera. In which case, I suggest when you connect camera to computer click on "my computer" and you should see your device listed there along with your C drive & so on. Click on the camera icon & viola, you can copy the images from there to your computer. Yea I had the same experience with PS too, well Elements in particular. And there is a setting (somewhere in Elements Browser window) to turn it off. Yea to simply download images - it doesn't require any software at all with XP. I use a card reader & rarely deal with using the camera cable to computer hook up. To use that device you'll remove the card from the camera & stick in the reader & its ALWAYS worked for me. Again you'll have to click on "my computer" to find the images there. Otherwise --- next step would be to try another usb cable.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

Hey I've been having the same problem on my Canon SD800 IS. It started after I loaded pictures on my computer using my friend's memory card. I just did what kjphotog suggested and it worked like a charm.
I've got the same problem. Dell laptop running XP Professional. I swear I used to be able to download to this computer. I installed & uninstalled Kodak Easyshare & now I can't download. If I try to copy the photos to the computer, it takes forever and copies a 0KB file...
i plug in the cable to the camera...after a process or two 3 or 4 choice boxes (stacked above one another) comes up giving me choices to download the pictures from the camera. i usually click the bottom box which is the one that allows me to select the lastest pics or the pics that are not downloaded yet. the problem is this page does not come up. the page that comes up is the one just before the box choice page. then when i fiddle around trying to have the box page come up and all that happen is a get a message saying something about connecting. thanks for your help
