Question about Hoover SteamVac F5914-900 SpinScrub Upright Vacuum
Most common problem when the brushes stop spinning on this model or any "SpinScub" model is that screen filter is clogged as suggested above. If that isn't your problem then likely the turbine has gone bad. Some genius at Hoover designed a metal gear to drive a Nylon gear (Inside the black part that says "Assembled in Mexico". If the brushes jam hard and sudden, the metal gear just shaves the nylon right off. Solution: You will need a new turbine unit. Cost for the part is about $36, installation takes about 15 minutes (about 6 screws and two tubes).
I refurbish and repair vacuums and steam cleaners for a living and see this all the time.

My brushes also stopped spinning so I took it apart. (Here is why the brushes stopped spinning on my vac) The motor that spins the brushes (the one that says "ASSEMBLED IN MEXICO")was covered with dirt and grimme. this crap was all over the gears and since this motor is not very powerful, it seazed very easily. After cleaning off the whole inside I lubed the gears with some lube from Walmart and cleaned all the hair and dirt from the brushes. My brushes now spin fine. However, If your gears are worn out then cleaning them will not help, you will need a new motor.

There are a bunch of people with this problem. The first thing is to check the little slide out lint trap on the bottom (red on my machine). If this is clogged the brushes won't spin--so I've heard. Check these websites www.mendmy.com/answers.php?id=24062 and for the part schematic for the machine www.vacshopusa.com/f7425.htm

I did take my Hoover apart but not with the bottom. You kind of need to take the top off first Take off all the pieces that are easily removeable then, start getting all of the screws out. The top kind of hinges up--I didn't want to do anything I couldn't undo. I picked out some dust and hair there wasn't much inside. I didn't see the belt or anything like that, a big part had a black plastic cover that I was afraid to remove. I put the machine back together and it worked awesome for about one hour. Guess I will try it again. Anymore advice would be greatly appreciated.
