You didn't say what model you have, but I believe they are all functionally similar to my Model B rower. There is a "skewer" assembly inside the seat rail with a shock cord and pulley's that keeps tension in the chain throughout its range of travel. To some extent it is adjustable by taking slack out of the shock cord. On mine, this can be done by grabbing the shock cord adjustment mechanism ("SCAM") with pliers and pulling it out of the rear of the machine and adjusting the slack. If it is very loose or you just want to be sure of what is going on, the entire skewer assembly pulls out from the front (flywheel side) of the seat rail after removing four screws that hold it in place. Go to the concept2 website for diagrams, instructions, and parts lists for your model.

SamInRaleigh has it right. I was able to eliminate the slack in my chain by pulling the mechanism out the rear side (seat rail side), and adjusting the bungee cord. Not sure if it works for other models but it sure worked on mine.

Wind the spring tight

Ensure you have 6 feet outside

SO YOU UNDERSTAND. THE SPRING IS COMPLETELY WOUND (Then backed off ONE ROTATION). and then allow the spring to RECOIL to PULL the line in and then the Pull Length. it will become quite clear as you are doing it

Loose cord

Recoil spring may be getting old and stretching, but more than likely, your pull cord is old and it has become stretched. Try replacing pull cord first.

How does the recoil spring,waher,2 hairpins pins, dog footand rope pulley get reassembeled?

the rope rotor will go on first, then the washer goes on, put the dogs in then put the spring on. insert the rope into the rotor, wind it up, feed the rope through the starter cover, carefully allow the rotor to wind in the rope a ways then put the handle on.

Recoil starter won't work. Removed assembly.

Probably the best answer here is to replace the starter mechanism in it's entirety. Any loose metal parts imply that some manufacturing spot-welding work failed. Hope this helps!

Installing recoil spring for Poulin P3314

Recoil Spring Rewind
I invert and secure the housing and rewind the spring large coil to small (need eye protection, both hands and no women around work area!). I'm right handed so I tension the spring enough to insert it inside the previous coil while holding what has already been installed with my left about 180° from my right hand. The tension will hold the spring in the housing once completely inserted. Then bend slightly the inner most part to engage the starter spool. It will require about 2 turns of pretension for it to retract properly.
If you're lucky you can pull the cord out enough for a pretension then slightly raise and add the withdrawn cord to the spool. HTH

Poulan model p3314 recoil spring won't go in correctly

You need to pretension it. Remove the pull handle, rotate the spool about 2 revolutions against the spring, rethread the cord and reinstall the handle.

WeedEater Edger PE550 Starter Rope will not recoil

Order a new recoil spring from your suppier. It comes wound up. Remove the old part first usually four screws on the outside. Make sure the rope is fully wound then insert the new spring and reassamble. If it becomes unwound by mistake its a labourious job to rewind but can be done.
