I have three 2600s here so I can probably help.

Using a working computer with a known good CD drive, swap the drives between the server and the second computer.

Try the CD on both the server and the secondary computer. Does the CD spin up and boot both the server and the secondary computer?

The Dell original standard CD drive shipped with the PE2600 is incapable of 'understanding' the latest generation of bootable CD's (no matter what the BIOS says).

As far as I can tell, it's not fixable in the firmware ..

However you can swap it out for a more modern drive - such as the TS-L462C (which is a plug in replacement combined DVD reader / CD reader/writer - and Dell post the required drivers on their PE 2600 web pages, so I assume it must be a 'supported' solution)

I'm trying to install Microsoft Server2003 on a Dell PowerEdge 2600 Server. I belive that the CD ROM is faulty since it doesn't boot off it even though I have the right settings in BIOS. I try to connect a...

Another common way around installation is to copy the whole contents of the CD / DVD to a hard drive.

There are a few methods.

My proffered is to make a bootable flash drive on another machine with known working capabilities that will bot into either an XP-pre installation scenario or a Dos based one.

From there it is often possible to start the installation or even copy the required files to a drive on a machine.

Advantage of copying the files is that the CD / DVD would never be needed to add additional component as they are stored on the machine itself.

That also speeds up installation dramatically.

Bios consideration mus be taken into account when booting from flash drives.

Proper external Hard drives are another viable option

PowerEdge 2600 does not boot up ?

you need to set the boot device order. Usually F12.
or you can go to bios with F2 or F10.

your cd-rom is wrong you need the Instalation and Server Management CD. I think it's possible to download this cd at their site.

CDROM and with a bootable CD is not been detected

Same solution as posted before if you need to boot from a DVD: take a Dell laptop CD/DVD combo drive, remove the screws and all and exchange the PowerVault CD drive unit with it. Same internal connector. Can't remember what model I stuck in, but I had to keep the front panel of the drive since it was slightly different, I probably could have glued it, but.... That's a server machine no one is ever going to see but me! :)

That also gave me a CD-Burner which is a decent addition in case you need to quickly burn a CD/make a backup/boot disk (like a "ultimate Windows CD" boot to fix anything that could go wrong).
