My dads 99 cherokee had a check engine light on he had it checked and the guy told him its was an o2 sensor, sold him the part and he brought it home for me to install, i put it in and the light is still on. will it go out on its own or do i need to have the code erased?

My first question would be, what was the original trouble code that directed the mechanic to replace the sensors ? You seldom need more than one O2 sensor at a time. Its possible the exhaust manifold is leaking and that might cause a problem that would turn on the warning light. Or it could be something else. A valve cover gasket will leak oil if it fails. No check engine light.
No Bad o2 But Check oil Level. How old Was The oil That Came Out? Fresh oil Will Clean Out Sludge Deposits If The oil Was'nt Changed In A Timely Manor It could Have caused leaks. also Check Drain Plug Gasket for leaks And Make Sure Oil Filter Is Correct And Tight.
Harness or connectors (The sensor circuit is open or shorted). Rear heated oxygen sensor (Bank 1) may be faulty. The rear heated oxygen sensor (or sensor 2), after three way catalyst
(manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. Check your connections and make sure the right sensor is in the right location.
Check the front O2 sensor. I had a 99 Jeep that would stutter and seem to lose power while accelerating. No check engine light came on but took it to a shop and had them put it on a computer. Come to find out that the O2 sensor was giving the engine misreads and was telling the engine to take in more fuel. Causing one of the cylinders to misfire.
It is not true that you have to replace the O2 sensors when you replace the catalytic converter. It is suggested, but not required. Most exhaust shops can test the catalytic converter for flow. before you spend the money to replace a part that does not need it.
More likely something else is going on. If you had an O2 sensor issue, I would expect a check engine light...read those codes and you will knwo where to go next...
When an O2 sensor fails, the system goes into a limp home mode, and esentially runs poorly, again look for error codes.
Suggest you disconnect the Battery for 15 minutes., Negative Post. Reconnect and take a run out of about 25 miles of mixed Highway, to enable the ECM to REBOOT.

check the fuses , you can have a o2 sensor fuse open, also check the wiring because o2s are close to the cats or manifoldss some time they burn and get shorted.., other thing you can do is unplug the o2s and drive it like that and see if it shuts off , if it doesn't so the problem is around that sensor...hope this help..
Well the water pump sounds bad....it is a cheap fix at $34.00 and will fix the overheating problem. The O2 sensors start at $63.00...but if you have a "check engine light" on, get it read at the parts store for free and see if the code is for the O2 sensor.
