Unable to Finalize Disc/Finalize Option Blacked Out
I have a new camcorder. I initialized the disc, recorded and played back video that I shot. However, when attempting to finalize the disc to play it in a DVD player, the option to "Finalize" the disc is blacked out. I followed the suggestions in the trouble shooting section of the manual and let the player cool for some time, but no luck. Any suggetions?
Re: Unable to Finalize Disc/Finalize Option Blacked Out
After spending some time with Canon at 1-800-828-4040 I have found out that there is one small but crucial step missing in their instruction manual on Finalizing the disc. Take battery out and power the camera with the cord plugged into wall socket. Turn camera to the on position and let DVD normalize then when it stops move the on switch downward into the play position. With the viewing window upen you will see thumbnails of the pictures that are on the DVD and a small green light will come on opposite play on the camera. Push function and a menu will come on that says disc operations at the top AT THIS POINT PUSH THE JOYSTICK TO THE RIGHT and you will notice the light move from the right side of the viewing window to the center. Now with the joystick scroll downward until FINALIZE is highlighted even though it is in white, push inward on the set button on joystick and you will get a screen giving you information about how long it will take to finalize and it will ask you if you want to finalize yes or no. Choose yes and it will turn yellow or orangish and will start finalizing. You will also get a progress bar at the bottom as it finalizes. When it is finished finalizing you will note that FINALIZE in the menu has turned black. The one step about pushing the joystick to the right just as soon as you get the menu is crucial. Hope this will spare a lot of people a lot of frustration. I was almost ready to send mine back to the company or junk it. Forrest

Finalising a disc enables the disc to be played on any other compatible machine. By doing this it changes the disc format so that you can no longer record to it turning it into a Play Only disc. On your Panasonic DVD Recorder you can record to many (if not all depending on the model) of the following DVD Disc formats to the limit of their capacity over multiple occasions. The disc in question can be played back and recorded to on the DVD Recorder during this time but until it is finalised it will not work on any other machine. DVD Formats: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD+R, DVD+RW. How do I Finalise my disc?
When you have finished the initial recording stop the disc and press the ~FUNCTIONS~button.
Using the ~UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrows~ on the keypad select "To Others" and press~ENTER~.
Using the ~UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrows~ on the keypad Scroll down to "DISC MANAGEMENT" and press ~ENTER~.
When the disc management screen opens you need to use the ~UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrows~ on the keypad to scroll down to "FINALIZE" and press ~ENTER~.
Using the ~UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrows~ on the keypad select "YES" and press~ENTER~.
Using the ~UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrows~ on the keypad select "START" to begin finalizing the disc, please note by pressing start here you will no longer be able to record or edit the disc being finalized.
Finalizing may take up to 15 minutes. Do not disconnect the mains power in this time. A message appears when finalizing is finished, press the enter button when this appears. It will now play on other compatible machines.
I have a Samsung recorder, and it requires you to "finalize" the disc before it will play on another unit. Check your manual for specifics, or look in your menu for the "finalize disk" option. Hope this helps...
A Dual Layered (DVD-R DL) disc has two recording layers on the same side of the disc. No recording is made on the 'other' side of the disc.
Finalising the disc will finalise both layers. Most probably your computer DVD drive cannot read both layers of the DVD-R DL disc. DVD-R DL discs can only be played back on DVD devices that are compatible with dual layered discs.
Check your computer DVD drive spec to see whether it can read DL discs.
I know it won't play in a dvd player till it is finalized. Leave it in camera mode, hit menu, and scroll down till you see the option to finalize. If you finalize it, it should play in a dvd player. I am having a problem with my camera(same model) where it won't finalize the disc. Any help out there?
The only reason that you have to finalize a DVD-R disc is so that you can play it back in an external DVD. Once finalized, you can no longer add motion video to that particular disc. Discs that are not finalized can still be played back when inserted in the DVD-camcorder.
