Printer was in storage for almost a year. Now it acts like it is printing but no copy shows up. Is this an ink problem? It had new ink cartridge before storage.
SOURCE: installed new hp black cartridge 56 ink but won't print
it shows if your using refill cartridge. & if you r using refill cartridge clear cartridge sensor with soft hands your problem would be resolved.
SOURCE: Printer won't recognize new ink cartridges
Follow this simple instructions:
Remove all the cartridges, clean the contact points on the cartridges and on the printer using soft brush/cotton dipped in alcohol/acetone/spirit. While they are drying, reset your printer; Turn it off > Disconnect usb cable, power cord, inthernet cable; >remove the papers from the tray >open the back panel door (the rear door where you clear paper jam). Also turn of the main switch which the dc adapter plugged in. After keeping it Off for about 5 minutes, turn on again using only the power cord, and again leave it on for few minutes > turn it off > connect all the cables > again turn it On and keep pressing the power button while it boots up. Now you can install the cartridges.
Good luck.

SOURCE: My HP Officejet 6500 Wireless
I also have the OfficeJet 6500 and had the same problem. The black text was printing using a mix of colored inks instead of the black ink, resulting in a grey, fuzzy text. I finally found a solution. In each application under Page Setup, there is an option called "Format for". Mine had been set to "Any Printer". I changed that to "Officejet 6500 E709n [830E4A]" and now it prints the black just fine. I have a Mac running 10.4.11. Hope this helps.

You can only use the black ink cartridge without the color ink. But no need to replace them in your printer.
When you print just choose black and white for the printed text must be black not colored. But if you still received such notification...just try to replace the color ink cartridge to continue printing
Note:
As per my experience. printer with exclusive black ink alone will damage the printer easily due to unbalance printing of ink

First: you need both ink cartridges for the printer to function properly.
Second: You may have a bad printhead, do the following:
Clean the print head then print a demo sheet.
If the Demo print is bad- IE: no black, blurry print etc., then you may need to replace the print head:
