I have a WD 65831 Mitsubishi television. I love it and have had NO problems so far with it. The picture and letters on the screen seem slightly fuzzy (out of focus). I had the bulb burn out and I replaced...

Projection TV sets have two very common problems oulined below.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • No Audio/Video - TV Makes Chirping Sound

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc

The left side of the picture has red and green stripes and ghost images. The right side does not have this problem, but the picture is not quite right. The convergence chips were replaced two years ago and...

That sounds like the convergence problem I had about a year ago, and like you, I replaced the convergence chips and that fixed the problem. It's cheaper to replace the chips if you do it yourself, but maybe not if you send it out for repair. If you can find an exact replacement board, that would fix it too, but I wouldn't necessarily expect it to last longer. The advice I read on replacing the convergence chips in my rear projection TV was that they would last 2 or 3 years and then need replacing again. So you're within that range.

We have a Hitachi 53udx10b tv. Recently it was

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Yellow and blue on screen

I am slightly confused about the model of the television, because a 46F500 is a rear projection set that doesn't have a lamp. It has 3 picture tubes and I have a few of them in my shop right now that have the problem you reported. What we do to this set when it develops a convergence issue is to check each resistor around the convergence chips for discoloration, and replace any of them that have changed in value, along with the STK392-150 ic's. If you don't have an ohm meter and solder/desolder equiptment, you can usually get a shop to do this repair for 150.00 to 350.00. Parts will be 50.00 and labor , the rest, depending on the quality of repair shop that you use. Good luck, Russmann.

There are only a couple of things that can casuse chirping in that model...1 is the convergence ic's and the other is the flyback. There are others but these are the two most common. Who replaced the convergence chips?
