Opened a new package of CDRW discs and all produced t "write-protected" message when a tried to format them prior to use. Verbatim was no help at all.

No help! When I dragged the file icon onto the balnk disc, it initiated the format process. I answered that I did not want to format the disc, the process terminated and closed the window. There is no alternative to formatting, and when I try to drop something on the disc, I just get the message "disc is write-protected".

It correct term would be "Finalized", you would need to erase the disc to be able to write ti it.

It's very odd that an never used disc would be finalized though.

You don't format CD-RWs or DVD-RWs. Just burn data to them.

How do I format a disc that has not been formatted.

With CDRW discs you just need to erase it before you use it again. I use a program called NERO to erase it. Once erased the formatting is done automatically when you're ready to put something on the disc. However, when the writing is completed, you'll have to erase it again to write new data to it.

When trying to copy a CD, I get the following error message: Warning - Bad Master Disc!

I assume it means just what it says. The Disc you are trying to copy is faulty?
Clarify what you are trying to copy. If it is copy protected, A duplicator wont copy it. Or the disc was made in a format incompatible with the master drive you are using. Ive had drives read some discs and another drive that cant read the same disc. Some brands of discs work better on certain drives. Try to use top quality reccomended discs such as Verbatim.
