Could you walk me thru connecting a Netopia 3347WG router

First Option :

Connect your computer directly thru Router LAN Port. now
If your Computer is configured thru Static IP address then change it get IP address thru DHCP. and Re start the computer. So it will get IP address from Router and you will be able to access Router Admin thru browser.

Second Option

You will have to reset router to factory defaults. To do that ; There will be Tiny Hole or Switch on Router Back side or front side.
Using strait Paper Clip wire ; Put in that wire in that hole and give very light pressure for 5 to 10 second. Make sure that router is Power ON.

So your router will be resetted to Factory default. Now reconfigure it

Leave it on but set a security key, so that unauthorized people cannot get onto your network.

You don't need a driver for the router. If you go to the netopia website, they will have directions to allow you to get into the box through your browser with step by step instructions. An alternative is to call your DSL provider. Their tech support should be able to walk you through all the steps. I hope that helps.

If you are using Internet Explorer, you must prepend http:// to the IP address to go there.

1) type http://192.168.1.254 into the browser window and you should go right there.

2) assuming that you are using the default configuration of the router, this should do the trick. Otherwise, you may have to manually place the laptop on the same network as the router.

Try #1 first, and see if that doesn't give you access.

Login to the router
Example if its Dlink
IP is 192.168.0.1
user: admin
pass: none

If linksys: 192.168.1.1
user: none

Theres alot of differnet things i could ask you, but im going to assume you're jsut setting up a basic VPN. That means that somebody is telecommuting to work and wants to hit the server at work.

That means you have a static ip at work, and your at home workers has whatever, a internet connection lets say. Im thinking DSL with ATT since its a netopia 3347N.

If the netopia has a gui interface, you cant vpn thru it. Its not a VPN router. Its a residential router that you're trying to make do too much.

The sad news is, you can't upgrade it to an Enterprise having firmware router anymore, netopia use to offer that, but when Motorolla bought them out last year, they did away with that nice little feature. For true VPN'ing with a router, first, go get a VPN router to start with.

Most people accomplish what you are doing by putting the netopia in to bridegemode, and then putting a VPN router like a linksys behind it.

the cable modem should be giving the netopia an ip address

go inside the netopia by opening Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.254

a little window will pop open

the username is admin, the password is the serial number on the bottom of the netopia

once in, click on configure, lan, then wireless at the bottom

make sure the wireless box is checked

name your network (SSID its called) like randy578

then click advanced if you want to enable wireless security encryption, your key to get online securely

click submit underneath it

clike the yellow triangle up at the top right

click save and restart

in like 2-3 minutes, click the wireless connection icon by your clock

connect to randy578 network

you should now be online

yes, youi can use as just a router, I use to do it myself, I had a netopia behind a linksys

but the netopia is actually a modem/router in 1.

you can also use as just a modem if you put it in bridge mode.

Yes, you need to swap the router out.

This is assuming you dont have the netopia in bridge mode with another device behind it.

Firstly... avoid showing your SSID (eircom-123456789) here, as the WEP key can be reverse engineered from the SSID.

To change your SSID, connect your router to your PC with an ethernet cable, go to your web browser (Intenet Explorer, Forefox, etc) and type 192.168.1.254, and press return.

This will open the control panel for the router.
Select 'EXPERT MODE' from the menu on the right, and accept the warning prompt. Then click on 'CONNECTION' and the 'WIRELESS' on the menu on the right.

In the main window you can then change the SSID for your network.

You can also change some of the other options in this window such as enabling closed mode, change security protocol, password, etc.
