I own a Dr165 for about 4 months
recently I've noticed a problem: while recording longish programmes like movies etc the recorder spontaneously stops recording, giving the message "recording file info... please wait.." and then when the message disappears goes back to recording mode. With the result that I lose the intervening data.
Could this be b'se of overheating? Or a faulty "Stop" switch? Or something more sinister?
Sounds like the laser head carriage slides or screw drive need oil or
the screw drive may have dirt in it that will cause uneven movement or
possible jamming of the carriage on the slide.
The carriage and drive screw need to move smoothly. The slides can
easly be oiled. The screw however can be difficult to clean. Using
paper can make it worse due to the paper fibre getting into the screw
as well. You could try a lint free material to clean the screw and then
oil it, preferably with a non drying oil.

hi anonymous, it may well be that you need to change settings on your DVD Recorder and/or on your TV. On my LG 42" TV I need to select the input mode ie. Movie, USB, music etc, as necessary. Maybe your DVD Recorder or TV can't handle the file format on you Portable Drive, check the manufacturer specs.
It is quite a common problem. What I do in my shop is to open the unit, and replace the DVD writer (is the same as a standard PC one) with another IDE DVD writer. (any model will work, but I try keep LG with LG etc)
Once you replaced the drive all should be back to normal. (I also use LG dvd writers on Daewoo recorders)
Hope this helps.
I have the LG DVD recorder DRT389H which has the same problem. You can't switch off the subtitles during timer recording from the Electronic Programme Guide. The only way I could stop this was to go to the main set-up menu then select the A icon. Select DTV Subtitle and choose a language that the TV programme isn't broadcast in. I chose Gaelic. The only disadvantage is that this stops any subtitles being recorded so you can't access them later.
I have an LG RH278 HDD/DVD Recorder, which was suffering from the problem that it could not play any bought DVD movies, which were previously working fine in that same player. It would however play svcd and DVD+R/-R movie discs.
The solution was to replace the laser tray. I found a new LG DVD BD lens LPC-815 laser tray here: http://www.laser-xh.com/en/?act=showproduct&proid=1147
I bought two for $5.50 each. Shipping was $32 (DHL), all together $45.10 (PayPal fees included). Delivery was fast and accurate within 3 working days (China - Sweden).
