My dvd rom wont play dvd only cd's

This afternoon it was ok..but now it wont play dvd's only cd's..my drive model is sony cd-rw crx830E on my compaq v2000..plz help me on what to do...tnx

DVD/CD players use two different lasers. One to read DVD and one to read CD. Sounds like your DVD laser burned out. Lasers last about as long as light bulbs do.

Yes it is... and nobody really does it. As it is much cheaper to to buy another CD/DVD drive. You can get an external CD/DVD drive too which hooks up to the USB port. Those Slimline models are really small and light and usually requires no external power. Plus you can use them on other computers too.

This is a combo drive

It will support
1. CD reading & burning (Blank CDR and CDRW)
2. DVD reading only.

We cannot use a combo drive to burn DVD.

Control panel,administrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll to cd/dvd rom drives right click properties then properties again then tick enable cd digital cd audio for this cd rom device or scroll to dvd regions select no _ for your specific area

It's a dell website. Dell also uses the same CD-ROM on there laptops. Scroll down to where it says CD/DVD and choose Sony. Good Luck!

make sure that the cd-rw/dvd-rom burner is getting enough consistent power test all leads that are attached to the cd-rw/dvd-rom burner including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty

Wont read cd's

You could either pay $50 for a qualified technician to "trouble-shoot", and still not fix it, or you could pay $40 to $50 to buy a brand-new CD/DVD reader/writer. Your choice?????

Try installing a DVD rom. The sony unit installed in your laptop is a cd rom/burner. Cd roms will not play DVDs.

Not reading DVD

It's common problem with combo drives in notebooks, they don't seem to last long. Try this:- Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete. Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers. If the problem persists the laser is faulty in the drive and the drive will need to be replaced.
