The best thing to do is to call them back and have them send someone over. sounds like it was not setup the right way. They should have made sure eveything works before they left.
to stop the fax automatically switching to fax mode you have to set it to manual to recieve calls and dissable the fax, there should be an auto/fax and call mode, therefore when someone calls it will go to your voicemail, but that means that you will not be able to recieve a fax.
Normally auto mode, will first try the fax, if no fax is recognised it will switch to normal line ringer, then if no answer it should go to your voicemail if unanswered.
This happens when the number of rings to answer of the provider voicemail is less than the number of rings to answer that the answer machine is set for. For example: if your provider voicemail rings to answer is set for 3 rings and the answer machine is set for 4 rings then the voicemail answers before the 4th ring, therefore the answer machine will never get a message. I would call the service provider's customer service number and request they increase the rings to answer above the number of rings to answer that the answer machine is set for. If you don't want voicemail to answer any calls(when your line is busy or when the answer machine is turned off) ask your service provider to disable voicemail.
Looks like the basic functions of the phone are correct. Remain the answering machine. Are you sure it can act as an answering machine? If it can act as answering machine the reason it is not doing so may be the following.
Answering function is turned OFF
Answering function may be ON but the number of rings before it answers is set too high.
I suggest you try the following Call you phone. Let it ring at least 10 times. If it can act as an answering machine it will pick up the phone and read the welcome message, because most answering machines (the recent ones at least) answer after 10 rings even if answering function is turned OFF.
The phones that can be answering machines usually do have a display that shows the number of incoming messages, or a LED that flashes to let you know that you have new recorded messages.
On the phone not ringing, just push the volume up button while the phone is not in use, that should adjust the ringer volume. As for the message saying that calls are being routed to an automatic message sertvice, that sounds like a voice mail offering from your service provider, not the phone. Uniden phones have a default greeting that says "Hello, no one is availible to take your call, please leave a message after the tone" Contact your service provider and find out if you have voice mail service on your line. If you do and want to use the answering machine on your phone, you will need the service provider to allow for more rings before the voice mail service takes the call.
This is the time that love cannot help with. Buy yourself a new home phone where the massages will pile up. erase all massages on your mobile phone. It is time to buy a cell phone which will record all masseges that you've received.
I'm assuming this is a digital recorder and does not use a tape.
Any chance the memory is full and you need to erase messages to free up space for new recordings?
