The Sylvania Netbook is an inexpensive 7-inch device that is convenient for accessing the Internet on public or private Wi-Fi networks. It is not intended to replace a regular computer for daily tasks; its purpose is to provide a lightweight unit to access social media and perform small tasks. The netbook defaults to mobile websites, but it does a good job at what it is intended to do. Connecting to Wi-Fi networks with your Sylvania Netbook requires configuring the device properly.
Boot up the Sylvania Netbook by pushing the manual switch below the screen. Push the F9 key to turn on the Wi-Fi on the device. Select the little wireless icon in the toolbar at the bottom; it looks like a small computer. Choose the "Wireless Information" tab. This will show the online status of the device, as in whether it has connected to the Internet. If you have checked the box beside this option, this tab also notifies you when new networks are available. If the status shows that you have connected. You may need to add your wireless router manually in the setup. Do this by choosing, "Add New." Obtain the necessary setup information from your wireless Internet provider. If you have an encrypted network, you will need to fill in that information about your router. To configure the wireless setup further, click on the name of the wireless network. Click on "Advanced Settings" and adjust your connection choices; this tab determines the order of connection if there is more than one network available. Another important setting on this tab is the "Allow Windows to configure my wireless settings" option. Check that box. Click the "Internet Explorer" icon on the desktop. If you are online, you will pull up the Google homepage. Hope this helps.

First down load and install Winrar at: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm this will aid you in unpacking the files in sylvania_smartbook_OS_update.zip . Down load the up date to a Folder on your C:/drive. If you were successful in down loading WINRAR, then the file icon in the folder will look like a stack of school books.(The OS Update.zip was packed by WINRAR so you have to un-pack with the same program.) Double click on that file icon. and the program will ask you where to extract to. Extract to C:\sylvania1 so you can find it on your drive. Look in my computer for c:\sylvania1 and open up the folder. Right click on the script file and copy or send it to your SD memory card. If you examine your SD card then, you will see that only script resides on your SD card. Take the SD card to your SYNET07526 and plug it in to the SD slot.(It goes upside down) cut off your machine. Turn on your machine and you should see it up dating. This is the full up date found at: http://digitalgadgets.com/netbooks/7-in-netbook.htm
If you only want to update the RT28701, there is a different procedure. You have to go to:
http://www.digitalgadgets.com/netbooks/update.html and down load the file to a SD card and copy that specific file RT 2870.cab back to your desk top where it will execute by you clicking on it.
It is two separate procedures. see my How to at http://www.fixya.com/support/r7350901-fix_synet07526_wifi_flashing
I think you are mixing the procedures.
SOURCE: Hello. I have the 7 inch Sylvania netbook and the
Google "digital gadgets.com". There find "Sylvania Products". Then click on "7 inch netbook support" and follow directions.
For item # 5, you may have to call your Internet Service Provider (Charter, AT&T or whoever you pay for your internet in order to get your "network keys" fill that in and then click "OK".
Next be sure you go to "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "Internet Options", "General" and complete "user agent (requires browser restart" by selecting:
"Default (same as windows XP)" or
"Same As Pocket PC" or
"Windows CE".
I selected "default" and was off and running.
Although this isn't a "lap-top" it is a really neat little machine and does a lot of stuff almost like one. It should be great for travel! It is a little slow and has small memory, but it's inexpensive and usb/sd ports are onboard. A regular universal mouse helps-just plug it into a USB port. I'm doing internet, movies, word processing, etc like everything and I think a lot of people are way under-rating this fun little machine! -DKA-

Pleas try to follow the detail suggestions below. It is looking for a password (WiFi Network Key) You have to double click on the little computer icon down in the right tool bar area, the one with the two side radiating arcs, and possibly has a small red X under it. The red X indicates that it is NOT connected. When you double click on that icon a window called RT28701 opens up, then you click on Wireless Information tab, then you cursor down to the name of your WiFi and high light it and click the connect box. Then another window opens up called Network Properties. Uncheck "The key is provided automatically" box. This will allow you to type in your "Network Key", the password that protects your network from outsiders. This "KEY" was set up when you installed the router on your server computer. If this does not work at first, turn the machine over on it's back and using a toothpick, insert it into the little hole about an inch diagonally from the right corner of the data plate, this will re-load a new copy of everything including the WiFi RT28701 driver. sometimes this driver gets confused. See my TIP at: http://www.fixya.com/support/r7350901-fix_synet07526_wifi_flashing Additional Information When I try to sign on with the red X showing, I get "The page cannot be displayed If I then double click on the icon down in the right corner I elucidated above, RT28701 opens up to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) with all zeros in the IP address field, and Subnet Mask, with no entries in the default gateway. That is a clue to me that the auto sign on has not found a viable network or needs something else. If I then click on Wireless Information tab, The list of available networks appear in the box. The machine keeps trying to associate my previous entered name site with my prefered site and tells me the signal is good, but it cannot link up. This is a signal to me that it has lost my Network Key or that the software has failed or both. I then click on advance and delete my prefered network and hit OK, this will force the software to ask me for my network again, and notice that the prefered is missing. I click on the name of my network again and then hit connect., then the Wireless Network properties window opens up and I can insert my Network Key again after I uncheck the "The key is provided automatically" box. I enter the key and hit the OK button. I still do not get a connection, so I reboot the machine, and wait for about 30 seconds and the machine synchs up because the little RED X under the icon has disappeared. Now the machine will hook to the internet as long as I want to, but sometimes when I turn the machine on it will not synch, so I go through the above sequence again. The secret is once you have entered your key and ask for the machine to synch up you have to reboot. Why? I do not exactly know, but I suspect that the WiFi driver looses it You may also want to look at TIP at: http://www.fixya.com/support/r7679654-sylvania_syneto7526_wirless_keyboard

Even a new computer needs updates, the driver and software is only as up to date as it was when the laptop was first manufactured. Try plugging the laptop in wired and go to Sylvania
