Question about Stihl Ts400 Cut Off Saw Carb Carburetor Air Filter

1 Answer

Rebuilt a Stihl TS400 concrete saw, and now it wont cut, the engine dies down and has no power but revs up? Ive tried everything!

Hi I recently rebuilt my TS400, put in new main bearings, new oil seals, crank was ok, new little end bearing, new piston crown, new rings, cylinder was ok, renewed all gaskets, fitted new carb, new air filters, new fuel filters, new plug, new (2nd hand) flywheel (as old one had timing held in with a nail) and ive adjusted the carb as everyone says to, but I still cant get it to cut, the unit starts, idles and revs up a treat, but if you try and cut with it the engine dies off and the saw doesnt have the power to turn the disc through even soft rock, im using a 12" stone cutting disc and I'm baffled! You can feel the saw trying to pull the disc over lightly but it just wont drive, any suggestions would be a godsend!

All these people are missing a basic thing: check the compression. If you did all thus work yourself, you may have reused the head gasket or not installed the new one correctly. It will run with no load, but once force in exerted, the pressure finds the leak and exploits it. There is a reason 2-cycle engines run at 130-160 psi normally.

SOURCE: Hi, My Stihl TS400 with 14"

Racing on a 2 cycle engine is usually a sign of a lean condition. It could be caused by a few different things including a bad crank seal or a torn intake manifold as some are made out of rubber. I would remove the cutter arm then pull the muffler to inspect the cylinder and piston. If they are scored it will be a costly repair.

Original parts diagram for stihl ts400

I found a parts diagram for a Stihl TS400 CutQuick concrete saw here: http://www.sawagain.com/stihl-concrete-saws-1/ . The direct link to the parts diagram is http://www.hellumdiamant.com/filarkiv/File/Sthil/ts400.pdf . I found some of the parts shown in the user manual as well. The manual is available here: https://www.stihlusa.com/WebContent/CMSFileLibrary/instructionmanuals/TS400_Manual.pdf . See page 44 for that parts diagram.

I hope this helps.

Hello, i have a stihl ts400 and i just rebuilt the topend(crank, piston, cyl, all bearings and seals.Fires up easy, idles fine, revs fine, but when you hold the throttle down it doesent want to hit rev limiter...

There is not an actual rev limiter. The top end is controlled by the carb. You actually want it to sound a bit rich at full throttle so that it has enough fuel when cutting under a load. What causes me some alarm is the revving up part. If it revs too fast that is a lean condition and can quickly ruin the piston and cylinder much like running straight gas. A torn intake boot can cause this. The high speed spec for the TS400 is 9,600 rpm + OR - 500 RPM. Your saw may not have a needle to adjust the high side as some have only the low speed adjuster. Also when you disassemble and clean the carb always use a new kit with the gaskets and diaphragm. Any Stihl dealer can furnish the kits and they aren't terribly expensive. Often between $10-20.

First my Stihl Quikcut was getting too much gas now after rebuilding the carb it's not getting enough

Not sure who told you about the compression but that is not true, are you sure the throttle rod is actually pushing the throttle shaft open?

Hi, my Stihl ts 400 blade runs at idle.I have tried adjusting the idle down as far as I can but it still turns.

seems that ur clutch is sticking.take recoil caseing of and check by turning blade by hand,if you feel the engine turning over, then your clutch drum is sticking,be sure to remove ur spark plug cap! it will be the bearing at the rear of the clutch drum, maybe a little oil and a few turns will help it free itself.hope this helps.

Need to know belt size fo the stihl ts400 concrete cutoff saw

You should go to a Stihl dealer and ask for the belt for a TS 400 Cut Off Saw. The belt is ribbed, you should only put on a Stihl part to replace the belt and make sure the belt is under the correct tension. When you go to the Stihl dealer you can ask them to show you how to make sure the belt is under the correct amount of tension.

Does the TS400 need engine oil apart from 2 stroke mixture

Hello. No, the oil mix is designed to do all that is necessary. Stihl 50:1 two stroke engine oil or equivalent is recommended for proper operation, cheap oil does not have the additives needed too keep rings free and inhibit carbon build-up. Also do not use BIA or TCW rated oils, or any others with duel purpose ratings.

Thank you
