Engine will turn over/crank but will not run

Have been out of town for an extended period. just had to replace battery, run log showed the generator has not run an excercise run since 6/12. the generator is natural gas fueled. After I changed the battery I set the time of day and excercise time. I then manually started the generator to check the battery operation, successfully cranked the generator. at the excercise time the generator would only turn over/crank but would not start up. The I could not manually start the generator until I removed the air filter cover and the air filter (new air filter). This previously happen about two years ago when I changed the battery, factory personnel fixed the problem by adjusting the natural gas flow and air mixture. Need some help with this. Thanks.

All internal combustion engines have the same requirements. They must have the correct air fuel mixture and source of ignition in order to run. Although I am unfamiliar with the system you have, the fact thst it will start without the air filter but won't with the air filter indicates that you either have a dirty air filter (you said yours was clean) or you have too much fuel entering the combustion chamber. Beyond that I would only be guessing the reason (air fuel mixture regulator, worn jet, wrong size jet, something else bocking air flow etc.)

SOURCE: installed a generac 20kw about a year ago, ran

With the engine off, check the exciter brushes and slip rings which supply magnetic power for the alternator winding in the stator. Also, check the motor-to-alternator mechanical coupling. Check the breakers for tripping. To service beyond this point requires a schematic of the alternator, a voltmeter, plus knowledge of what the schematic is telling you. Good luck!

I have a 18RESA Kohler Generator that I keep getting a locked Rotor code warning. I clear it and then try to restart and it comes up again. The battery appears to be good.

Locked Rotor is reported as an overcrank fault "OC".

You first need to verify the engine fails to crank, which is likely a starter motor or start circuit failure.

If the engine cranks three separate times and then the OC fault occurs, it simply means the engine did not run... more likely a fuel issue.

But either can be caused by numerous reasons.

My 1992 Chevy C2500 suburban starts & runs great for the first 3 or 4 stops on my errand list - then won't start. It takes a jump instantly then runs fine again.

How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? Make sure battery has a full charge and battery cables all good on both ends, not just at the battery. Check your charging system. Engine cranking, your systems get battery voltage. Engine running, the systems get generator voltage, that can be several volt difference.
It's possible there is a problem with voltage drop, somewhere.
When problem is ongoing, if it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the plugs. Also check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse. Try to find what your missing? You may have to check voltage drop on that system. Just my opinion.

Perkins 20 kva diesel generator runs and stops in about 2 minutes.alternator failure is displayed on screen.

Ensure any engine control switch is set to the run position, with the load disengaged. Manually set the air shut off valve (if fitted) to the run position (see Fig. 18), Turn the key switch to the start position, which will energize the solenoid allowing the engine to crank over for a few seconds then start.

Check the instrument panel is showing normal running oil pressure, and the ammeter for charge to the engine batteries.
Allow the engine to run for five minutes checking the instruments are reading correctly. Stop the engine and check the oil and coolant levels, replenish if necessary.

Where can i find the low oil alert module ?

Yes , if there is an errror on the oil pressure switch or a low oil level then the engine will not be allowed to turn in. Check and refill oil, check the oil pressure switch , it can be clogged and so might not work.

I have a 5000 w maxa ER generator that has a battery assist added ( PM 0525312.17 ) Question...Is the battery a regular 12v car battery, or maybe a lawn tractor battery?? Once the generator is started...

Replace battery with your choice of 12v products considering physical size, amp range and warranty. Lawn tractor batteries seem to have the least life/duty cycle. There are two methods of charging the battery used by Coleman. One is to charge the battery with charger/alternator coils installed under flywheel of the engine and second is to charge with built-in circuit in generator itself. Examine your wiring diagram to discover which you have. Simple test with volt meter will show if system is charging. Test voltage at battery with engine off, then start engine and retest looking for slightly higher voltage indicating charge. The charging system is like a trickle charger and not like your auto with initially high amp charge then taper to minimum. If your run your generator for long periods of time and you feel that the battery is being overcharged, then rig a switch to stop charging after one hour or longer. Good holiday

Overcrank error message

The 'overcrank' error simply means it tried to start but never actually started. It cranked for an extended period. Check the fuel and starting issues you would normally check to start the engine.

Overheat/battery drain

Hello dogwillhunt,

It is normal for a two-way radio to generate some heat, especially during extended periods of long talk time. Consumer two-way radios tend to be much more susceptible to this because they tend to be constructed out of materials that do not dissipate heat very efficiently, such as polycarbonate and plastic. Periods of heavy transmit times also use additional power, causing the radio’s batteries to run down more quickly and require replacement or recharge. Use of the display backlight feature can generate additional heat and run the unit out of battery power even more quickly.

If the radio is heating up excessively and burning through batteries (pardon the pun) in situations where you are not using the LCD backlight excessively or transmitting for long periods of time, this may be indicative of a problem with the unit that would require service, such as a short or defective component. If such is the case, I would recommend contacting the manufacturer.
