I need to address question 2 before 1.

2. If your error message says it is off, or off line try this. Go to control panal. find printers and double click. Find you printer and right click. You should see use printer online. If you do, click. Go back right click on your printer, and click Set as default printer. This should do the trick. If not you will have to give me a little bit more info on the problem.

1. Go to control panel. doulbe click on printers, Find your printer , and right click. You shoud she printing preferences. left click. at the top you should see tabs (General, layout advance) some printers have more than those tabs. Click on the General tab. In the body of the box you should see something like print quailty. In that box it shoud have, draft, normal, best, or something equilivant to that. If you click the draft, you documents will print fast. However, if you want something to print in normal mode or best mode, for a particular project, without going back in and changing your preferences. When you start to print, a window should pop up and give you options to change this before you print. (Just for that project). If it does, click on prefrences, and change it to normal or best. you can also change color mode, to black only in this print box if you don't want to waste your color. This will not change your original preferences, it only changes it for that project.

SOURCE: Paper Jam HP OfficeJet 8500

etechrepair.jpg Constant jam indication. This gear is more than likely the cause after exhausting all other avenues. Also nearly impossible to get to let alone replace even if HP offered the part. There is a black cover over the clutch assy that can be removed to reveal the gear. In most cases the gear is either sitting in the bottom of the machine or split down one side. This is the second machine that I have diagnosed with this problem in a very short time. If you have this broken gear, consider it toast. Matt / E-tech Copier and printer repair.

SOURCE: Try to print but: get General Printer error 0x61000f6

This error comes due to carriage jam. Turn off the printer and unplug it from wall socket. Now, remove the cartridges and check for any dried up ink residue on cartridges on inside the carriage. Clean the cartridges contacts and carriage using a Q-tip dipped i alcohol. Let the carriage and cartridges dry before you plug in the printer.
Install the cartridges and check. If it still shows error then unplug the power cord coming to the printer without switching it off. Now, remove the rear door of the printer and check for any paper jams over there, remove if any. Wit for at least 15 seconds and plug in the power cord. Now check whether it is working.

Press the settings button i.e the button with the wrench icon on the machine. Now select "Print Report" and then "Image on Fax Send" and set it to "ON". Save the settings and try again. It should work.
Let me know if you need further help. Good Luck.

hi, Mr Justin Becker
i think its a power supply problem, first you should try another dc adaptor, if your printer works fine with the new one, you have to replace it or take it for repair.
if it is a DC Adaptor problem it cost about: US $29.74

Try cleaning out the cartridge slot. This is very often the reason that your printer isn't recognising it, because it's dirty.

Hello, I suggest you have a dig around the HP website as there appear to be several variants of your Officejet 8500. Go to and it will automatically detect your country and take you to that country's web page, though I recommend you try to get on the USA site by going to the bottom of the page and clicking on the world icon. Once there, select 'drivers and downloads' and on the next screen type in your model type, ie 'Officejet Pro 8500'. When I did this several versions came up and only you know which one you have!. If you go to the drop-down menu to select you OS, Mac OS X comes up with no version type, but if you go to the top of the page you'll 2 boxes, in the 'Product' one, make sure you've got 'Officejet Pro 8500' in there, and in the 'question or keyword' box type in 'what version Mac OS X' then in the results you'll see quite a lot of hyperlinks to pages, and at least 2 of them refer to OS X 10.4, but as I said before, you'll have to have a good dig around yourself.
