remove the moldings on the upper left and upper right corners theres a philips screw under there that you take out and the complete cover tips off towards you.
it sounds as if its your lid switch. on some top load whirlpool washer it will fill even if the lid is open. if you open the control panel and open the jones plug you can check for continuity on the lid switch
