My brother fax has been working just fine, but I have been away and came back home, changed all ink cartridges (with the appropriate brother ones) and now the machine won't do anything.
It says "close cover" in the little screen. I have checked and re-checked every cover that I can find...nothing seems open -or even ajar.
What is wrong?
Thanks for your help

Re:
My friend i have a brother 6 in one mfc 3320cn. at one time it gave me the same problem all i did was took a short sheet white paper and feed it manually through the paper feeder which remove all the dirt from with in and presto the machine starts to function . probably you can try my method.as your machine might have gotten some dirt inside and needs to clean.if you do not succeed i would recommend that you take it to a tech to look at it.if your machine is on warranty then i would sugest you takt it back to where you bought from to repair it or replace it.these brother machines are very delicate they are like huyu egg.good luck .

Re:
Unplug the machine from the wall socket including the phone line and leave it off for approx 5 minutes.
Reconnect the phone line then restore the power and see how that works. If it makes no difference it is possible the sensor for the door you need to open to gain access to the ink carts has got broken aor out of line.
Have a look for the interlock sensor and see if the protrusion on the lid that operates it has got broken off or if the sensor flag may be out of line so the sensor is not switched when the lid is closed. You may be able to "fool" it by operating the swith with a screwdriver balde or similar.

Some brands of fax machines and all-in-one printer/scanner/fax/copiers need the ink cartridge to be present and have some ink in it to perform functions which don't actually require ink.
My dad bought a Brother all-in-one, and he is unable to scan or send faxes unless he replaces an empty ink cartridge first. If you have a Brother fax machine, I'd suggest returning it and buying a different brand. They waste ink on unnecessary cleaning procedures and force you to buy more for stuff that doesn't need ink.
My MFC-420CN acts up occationally. Remove the new cartridge, hold it as you would to install it, Rotate it to the right about 45°. Snap it with the back of a finger (dislodges any air bubbles in ink feed). Reinstall cartridge (ensure it is fully seated. This works for both Brother cartridges and the eforcity cartridges I've been using for the past couple of years. HTH

If you are using new cartridges, the problem is in the sensors. The ink sensors get dirty and malfunction. Remove the ink cartridges and thoroughly clean all the surfaces, Allow to completely dry and replace the cartridges. This should cure your problem.
p.s. I usually use alcohol on a Q-Tip to clean
Your Brother machine is designed to stop ALL printing operations (printing from the pc, printing received faxes and printing copies or reports) when any of the ink cartridges are empty. This is to ensure the life of the print head and maintain premium print quality. If the unit were to continue printing, print jobs and cleaning cycles would suction air from the dry cartridge and damage the printhead. Even if you print in black only or change the print settings to MONO or GRAYSCALE to avoid printing in color, the programmed cleaning cycles would still suction the dry cartridge, because they are programmed to clean ALL the ink nozzles.
The only way to continue printing is to replace the empty ink cartridge or cartridges.
While memory is available, black and white faxes will continue to be received into memory. If a color fax is being received, the Brother machines HANDSHAKE will request the fax be sent as black and white fax.
All faxes received into memory will automatically print once the ink cartridge is replaced.
NOTE: Brother strongly recommends that customers do not use generic ink or refill their Brother ink cartridges. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability since the ink formulation in genuine Brother ink cartridges prevent smearing and clogging of the print head. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that was caused by the use of unauthorized third party ink and/or cartridges.
After replacement of each ink cartridge the machine will display "Did you change?" for each colour. If one or more do not come up with this message you may have a problem.
Check each cartridge for the black flag is moving up and down with the liquid in the ink cartridge. If it stuck firmly tap it on a table until it is freed.
Another problem if the black sensors in the ink supply unit are pushed back it may not read the cartridges. If visably they look pushed back (usually only two) I can let you know how to correct.
Finally the mainboard in the machine can fail causing some inks not to read but you can not resolve this yourself.

the only one thing you can to do is stick masking tape around the cartridge, there is an switch, when you take off the cartidge the switch is off, when you put it on the switch is on, this is out = "off" and in= "on", do the same with the other colors.
greetings.
It won't turn off, either
