Question about Canon SPEEDLITE 580EX TTL Flash

1 Answer

580ex not flashing at all

After have used it very strongly (many flashes at 1/1 power) the strobe doesn't work anymore. Everything seems to be OK looking all over the LCD, but the strobe doesn't charge anymore, it is not even audible the normal noise it makes when the capacitor charges any further. the "ready light" never turns on at all...

Same symtoms as canonist's reported. Everything else seems to work except it just won't flash anymore after 2 years of great service.

i just had the same problem...what's the solution?

  • survic2 Jul 23, 2008

Same exact problem x6 or so at this point. Have a 580EX that is 2 years old, has been repaired three times and is down again. Have a 430 that is less than a year. Just had it repaired by Canon less than a month ago and guess what, the lights come on, but it won't flash. My little Sunpak is much more reliable. My big Canons are only good for a few months. Next purchase will be another brand.

I purchased a Canon SPEEDLITE 580EX TTL Flash and with minimal use it does not work any longer. It does not flash, the led panel does not work and when i was working with the settings right before the panel went out it made a loud pop the flash went off and now nothing. Piece of junk and at 350.00 is not a good buy. Really sucks......Was using it with a canon eos20D. Do not buy a Canon Speedlite 580ex in my humble opinion.

My 580EX is 3 years old and has worked perfectly until this last week, I can get a red (adequate flash charge) light but cannot get a green light for even a single shot. Tried new alkalines and new/old rechargables. Cameras (G9 and EOS40D) do not show flash ready symbol either.

My 580 was working fine on my 20d then when I put it on my 30d it would come on but will not flash. I thought maybe I did something crazy to it but it sounds like this is something that is happening to other also.

580ex won't communicate with Canon 7D (Because I dropped it)

Not sure about the repair costs but why not invest in a Phottix Odin wireless system? I use them in my work and they perform flawlessly. Small and lightweight plus they are wireless which means that the camera can communicate through windows and walls etc.
Hope this helps

Canon 580ex II strobe issue

This depends on the mode you have selected on the flash gun. If you have Multi selected you will get the strobe effect. The strobe effect is all so present to help the flash set the correct exposure. It's not a problem with the flash or the camera. Spend some time reading through the flash gun manual. I have to admit it is not always clear. Also try Youtube for a video.

My 580EX seems to have low power

Hi Doug,

Try putting in 4 brand new batteries Lithium Energizer.
Or feed the Turbo Battery into the 3 pins port.

You flash is over 5 years old.
Or your NiMh are no longer holding a charge.
Do you have a DVM?

I can't get flash to work on my camera

Make sure you have good strong batteries. "Strobe Charge" is what the camera says when it's sending power to the strobes that make the flash. It can take alot of juice and if you're using weak or old batteries they may not be able to handle the load. I found with my DSLR that the Energizer Lithium batteries are great for cameras and have been using those exclusively in all my cameras. I just got the Aiptek about a month ago, have not changed batteries yet. My other digital video camera ran for over two months on one set of them, and I used it alot. It's on it's second set now and my husband has it.

Flash quit flashing

To test the flash to fire without the camera:

Cut a wire about 4" long.
Strip both ends to about 1/4" to exposed the wire.
Turn on flash, wait until fully charged.
Touch one end of wire(lead) to Center of flash contact and hold in place.
Touch other end(lead) to side of flash.
This should fire the flash, if the tube or the cap is good.

Hope they are helpful.

Canon Digital Rebel XT Bulit-In Flash Strobes in Low Light

use more light:)
its very normal that it does that. it dosent get enough light so it cant focus. the only way it can autofocus is that it stobes the flash to adjust the focus automaticly. use an external flash like 580EX and u will get an focus asisten thru a red grid throne by the flash unit.

Not working with my Rebel XTI

ALL Canon digital EOS cameras will work with E-TTL only. Solution: you need EX flash for full auto.
