Open the cover over the scanning area and check the narrow strip of glass to the left of the platen glass. See if there is any foreign material there (dirt, whiteout, etc) and clean it gently with a damp cloth. You may find a piece of clear plastic covering that area. It's there to keep the glass from getting scratched. If the plastic is heavily scratched at that point, it can cause the line you're seeing. Removing the plastic will clean up the scans.

Black line down left side of sheet, if i'm copying a page that is and i can't get rid of it no matter what i try i've changed the drum and the toner and still get a line down the whole sheet

If the received fax's are ok and there is no line; and you only get the line when you make a copy....I assume the people you send to are also getting the black line down the page,?? then the problem is in the optics...favorite is some kind of dirt, glue, or corrector fluid on the glass that the original passes over when you make the copy.

We have a black line down the center of all copies...

If the problem only happens on copies or sent faxes then no it is not your drum. There is something on your scan glass. My guess is you are getting the line on your copies when you run the original through the document feeder. If you get lines through the document feeder but not on copies made off the glass then it is a dirty scan glass. There is a thin glass strip where the document feeder feeds the original. Usually something like white out that did not dry smears off an original and ends up on this thin strip of glass. Scratch it off with your finger nail and use some glass cleaner to resolve the problem. The scan glass is about 1/2 an inch to an inch wide and will be on the same side of the machine that the copier feeds the originals in on

Blank line down left side of outgoing fax or feeder copy

The most common cause of blank (void) lines on a scanned document is from whiteout on the glass where the page is scanned when using the document feeder.
If there is a clear mylar sheet on the bottom of the document feeder, the whiteout may be there instead.

If there was dirt or a dark smudge on the glass (or mylar), it would show up as a black line, but whiteout is white, and shows up as a void (blank) line.

A Solid black line down the left side of the page

It could be 2 things...

1. Your scanner glass is dirty...open the doc feeder and clean the glass. probably Wite-Out.

2. A segment of your scanner assembly lamp is burned out. Not good, uneconomical to repair.

Leaving a wide black line in right hand side of transaction

Pop open the fax document feeder, and look for a glass strip about 1cm wide, that runs from left to right across the machine.
You will probably see a few spots of dirt, or more commonly, a blob of white liquid paper stuck on the glass, on the side of the machine that corresponds to the black lines on your fax.
Clean this glass strip gently, using a soft cloth dampened with a mild detergent. I often use diluted windex. You may need to scrape liquid paper gently with your fingernail. Close the cover.

Next, put a blank sheet into the feeder and make a copy of the blank page. If you have cleaned it properly, the copy will be blank as well. If you still have a line, align it with the feeder and use this as a guide to show you where the glass may still have some **** stuck on it.

Good luck!

Black line down one side of paper

Lift the auto feeder cover and clean the narrow glass that the originals are scanned across...sounds like you have some dirt there -maybe correction fluid? That's the most common.

Faxes I send are reduced in size and have series of black line down right hand side.

If its reduced in size during transmit or copy then simply place a letter size document in the feeder and close the two sliders up to the sides of the paper. If you don't close the slider up to the paper it will go into auto reduction
