Can this system be enabled/adjusted by a wireless remote? If so someone else in the house might be using a tv/stereo remote on the same frequency. Possibly even your neighbor's garage door opener.
Posted earlier that it was volumne and tone control on two stacked pots with a on off contact at the rear. I measured and posted the value of the two stacked potienmometers correctly. But I mislabled the use of them. Correction: the tone control is a different pot located nearby.
Only if you replace the pot with two resistors of equal value. Both need to be also equal to 1/2 the value of the pot. Then at the point the 2 res tie together -- Tie that point to the middle lead location and the other leads to the other points where the pot was connected.
Use 1/2 watt or 1 watt res.
Open the speaker where the volume control is located then check it if there are lose connections. You can also clean the variable resistor or the volume control with a contact cleaner solution or oil... ^_^
sounds to me that the vol control has lost its earth end connection So yes its a problem with the dial control
You couls try some contact cleaner But better still lift of the lid and base if possible while the amplifier is not plugged into the power socket and see if you have a dry joints around the vol control pot
