My dell dimension 3000 has a blank screen when the computer is turned on. When first turned on it will show the dell logo and the windows logo but then after that only shows a blank screen with the pointer of the mouse on it. How can I fix the problem so that I am able to use my computer again. I would like to be able to keep everything that is already on the computer. Thanks!!
When you get the Dell splash screen press the F2 key to get into setup. Use the arrow keys to go down to Drive Configuration and press enter. Go down to Primary Master Drive and press enter. Is the Hard Drive listed there? If not, that is your problem. Press Escape then use arrows to go down to Memory Information and press Enter. Is all of your Memory listed? If not, that could be the problem. Press "esc" to get out of setup. If the Computer does not freeze while in setup I would suspect the Hard Drive is bad. Is the Pointer responding to Mouse movement or does it lock up? In your situation I would first try to Boot from the Windows CD. Write back and I can explain how to do this. If that does not work I would begin to test Hardware. Do you hear any Beeps when the unit is turned on? If you can, E-mail back with more Info.

Ok that didn't work either. When I done that it shows safe mode in the left and right hand lower corners and it's doing nothing. Nothing happened to the computer as far as power outage or anything. Is it true that windows automatic updates were causing viruses on computers??
Do you have any other suggestions?? I have a disk to reboot the computer but it doesn't do anything when I put it in the hard drive.
Well you can try going back to the menu (that you can select safe mode with F8) and select last known good configuration. Hopefully that will work.
No I don't believe it is true that Automatic updates installs viruses. Although it is possible that an update screwed something else up.
That should be by repeatably pushing F8 just before and as Windows starts to load. If that doesn't work, try holding the CTRL key down. As either or should get you into the menu.
push the button combination's before you see the loading page for windows
when windows is booting try to push shift F8 or F10 or ctrl F8 or F10 or something close. This should bring you to a list of options to boot. Boot into safe mode and update your drivers and re boot. If it is not the drivers you may have a hardware issue. Try this and get back to me
