Connecting Bose active equalizer to Sony str-dn1030

I own 901's(since new) with the active equalizer powered with a non-Sony surround sound receiver.

Basically, you use the MD/Tape in/out jacks to route the signal to the Bose active equalizer. Switch the Tape Monitor switch if no sound is heard.

Connect equalizer cables (4 total) to the MD/TAPE section of your receiver. OUT from the receiver to the equalizer IN and Out from the equalizer to IN on the receiver.

One issue with the equalizer running through the MD/Tape jacks is that it may affect any other speakers hooked up to your system.

You can pull the Left and Right stereo program from either MD/Tape or Video 2 Audio OUTputs. Run a pair of RCA cables to the Active EQ's Line IN; then the EQ's Line OUT to the Cavalier's Line IN.

If the Tape output you're borrowing the program from is already connected to something, use RCA-cable splitters.

Remember to NEVER activate the monitor for that Tape function during playback of any digital audio source - it disables the digital input; or if the 901's are being used - it will remove the signal to the Cavalier.

Now if you wanted to use the 901's in your movie listening this will work with two limitations

Your receiver doesn't have preamp outputs for Front Left and Right out so you'd be extracting only the mixed-down 2-channel version of whatever the Sony is processing.

You'll have to manually control the Cavalier's volume because the pre-out you're using is BEFORE the Sony's volume control.

It might still be an improvement over what you have now.

If no Amp is used, connect jacks ( Left, Right) from your receiver output to Bose equalizer Input ( L, R) where it says Amplifier. Then also under where it says Amplifier, connect jacks from Output to your speakers. This would require the type of speaker wires that are RCA (plug in, red and white) on one end bare wire on the other to the speakers.
I don't know what the output is on your Kenwood, but if it's low watts, an amp is much better to crank those Bose. It's a different connect with an amp. Go L &R from the receiver to Equalizer as before, then from equalizer to amp Input where it says Tuner. then hook bare speaker wires to back of amp to Bose speakers.
You should have full use of Bose controls. The Monitor button is for an extra component that can be hooked up on the back, right side of equalizer.

Did you buy the 901's new along with the eq? If you did then I wouldn't suspect it to be the eq. If you bought it used, it sounds like the eq. I have had two of them go bad. Are you cutting the bass up on the Onkyo? Do you have the speakers placed correctly, like 18" from the wall? These speakers don't have a lot of bass unless they are placed correctly against a wall. They really sound best in a corner. You should get a difference when you move the opts on the eq though. Hope this helps some

use a dedicated amp for ur 901s..and like the guru said,if ur doing multi channel amplification,just get ur front signal from ur control amp and feed it to ur 901 amp through the 901 eq.i used to work for bose as a service tech here in okinawa ,japan.

Most HK av receivers have pre amp out,power amp in with metal jumpers connecting them for the main or front channels. that would be the best place to hook up the EQ on a AV receiver. If your receiver doesn't have pre out, power in jacks , you can use tape monitor .record out playback in. The tape monitor option is best for stereo use , as the active EQ will charge all speakers in tape mode, possibly damaging other speakers.I run my 901 s with a seperate pre-amp,power-amp hooked up to my Denon AV receiver that way i can run in surround w/standard speakers

There's good news and bad news. The bad news is that a multichannel receiver with Bose 901's attached as you have them will only sound right in STEREO on stereo analog material. For one thing, the other speakers around the room are not designed to receive its Active Equalization and for another, if you engage your Tape Monitor you will NOT BE ABLE TO HEAR DIGITAL sources. Tape Monitor is for analog stereo material only and on my receiver it disables any digital inputs so you really can't use the Tape Monitor circuit or attached devises for modern digital sources. However, you can still employ the various DSP options to spread 2-channel analog source material around the room. I do.

The good news. I have a setup similar to what I think you're trying to do and it works great! With one caveat - My receiver actually has 5.1 analog Outputs so I can drive up to 6 external amplifiers if I want to (I drive 4). Yours does NOT so we have to be creative in extracting the front two channels from your multi-channel receiver. The obvious place would be at one of the few OUTputs on the back, assuming you have one free to use.

I see Video 1 and MD/Tape have Audio Outputs. Use one of these to feed the Bose EQ. **

A separate stereo amp for the 901's was my solution. I run a Carver AV-406 (5-channel amp) for my 901's in Front, 2 Subwoofers and the Rear Surround channel, with the Active EQ between the receiver Front L&R Outputs and the 901's amp channels. My receiver controls everything and just drives the Center and Surround speakers.

You could get by with just a stereo amp for the 901's. A Carver M-200 is a good efficient amplifier that would have you cooking just fine (2x100W). Run it with the Active EQ between the receiver Front L&R Pre-Outputs ** and the 901's amp channels.

** Sony STR-DE595 (Video 1 or MD/Tape Audio Out ***) >>> Bose EQ Amplifer IN, then
Bose EQ Amplier OUT >>> new amplifier IN.

Attach the 901's to the new amp, set its volume to Max and run through your receivers speaker level setup.

*** In either case you will NOT be able to SELECT the source you use for the 901 Pre-Outs for listening, or else the 901's will not get any sound sent their way. This is what's happening to you right now when you select MD/Tape. You're disconnecting the source from the 901 EQ.

You may have to get ugly with your other input components to find them all homes on the receiver. The labeling won't necessarily match up with the device types. Mine is ugly like that and I have a lot of connectors, but I have even more input devices.

If you have CD, TV Cable box and DVD (typical) you need to assess what you have that is digital and use what you can wherever you can, then the leftover analog device(s) - PC? - can go into any available analog input that is left over.

Whichever of these connections you DO NOT use for the 901's will still be available for using some kind of conventional analog recording device or sound processor such as an EQ or dbx Expander. However, as with any digital receiver, selection of that device for monitoring will kill the sound from any DIGITAL source you have playing (or maybe it just won't allow you to monitor).
