Unit is low on Freon. Take it to a repair shop to find the leak & recharge the unit.

clean the coils dirt blocks air and causes freezing or fan over heat ===with a spray bottle [water little dish soap ] and unit on fan remove filter and spray the coils the fan will suck the spray through coils do not wipe the coils they bend easy and are sharp keep spraying a few times to clean it then turn back on when clean air moves better and filter light should go off

Clean both the cond and evap coils if they don't let the air through
that can cause icing
Check for strong air flow front and rear

A.c. shuts off frequently

If you stored the unit upside down or sideways, the oil may have run out of the compressor. If the unit is reinstalled, it's important to let it sit in the correct position at least 24 hours before starting it back up.

Also check the condenser coil (the part of the unit that's sticks outside) and make sure it's clean. Likewise, check the filter and the evaporator coil (the coil on the inside) to make sure they are both clean.

Not cooling

it sounds to me like u have a gas leak.you shouldent run the a/c until it gets fixed reason being that the cold suction gas is used to cool the compressor windings.if u continue to to run it you may end up in more expenses:-)
