I have a 1998 4wd automatic toyota 4runner and it won't start. The engine turns but won't "ignite" the engine light and A/T oil temp light appear on dashboard. any suggestions on what to check

It was driving fine until a couple days ago when I was driving onto an entrance ramp to the HWY. All of a sudden it just kept slowing down until it would not move anymore. I then popped the hood and checked fluids and realized I had very little oil in it. I had it towed put oil in it but the engine and A/T temp oil light stay lit when I turn key.

Hi Nikki, What oil was low? Was it engine oil or gear box oil? Did the engine overheat? what exactly happened? Did you hear any strange noises when the engine stopped? Was the vehicle towed or was it on the back of a recovery vehicle? If it was towed, at what speed and over what distance? What engine is fitted? Is it petrol or diesel powered? Give as many details as possible to help us help you. Regards John

The engine oil was low. The engine did not overheat, but my boyfriend said my water temp. may have been to hot and I don't have a water temperature gauge. I did not hear any strange noises. The vehicle was towed on the rollback for about 20 miles. The engine is a 5vz-fe gasoline

  • Hi Nikki, I think your best course of action is to take the vehicle to a qualified technician. Ask for a report of the engine condition and then ask for a complete diagnostic scan to be carried out. It sounds to me that the low oil level has caused damage to the pistons, piston rings and possibly the crankshaft bearings. It is a good policy to pop the hood daily and just check the oil and coolant levels daily, and the brake fluid at least once a week. Let's hope that my prediction of doom and gloom for your vehicle is a very pessimistic one and everything is fine. Regards John

SOURCE: 2008 Rav4 Check engine and oil lights on ignition off

You have a stuck relay. It will be in the fuse pannel under the hood. With the car off open your hood and find the fuse pannel the best way to find it is to put your finger on the relays and feel them. One will be buzzing. You will have to get another one from your parts store and replace it.

SOURCE: 2011 Toyota Camry winshield washer fluid light on dashboard won't turn off after filling tank.

The sensor inside the tank is defective or covered in goo. Remove the sensor from the tank or remove the tank and flush it clean with hot water and a mild solution of white vinegar, if the sensor still reads the tank is low replace it.

SOURCE: 92 Toyota 4runner truck was running perfectly fine Later in the day went to start and the alarm just started going off and wouldn't turn off. Truck won't start even with keys turned in igniti

The alarm system somehow got activated , this is usually because the battery becomes discharged or disconnected try doing this:
Remove the key from the ignition
disconnect the negative battery terminal
put the key back in and turn to ON
exit the truck and leave door open
reconnect the battery terminal
get in and leave door open, if the alarm horn stays off it should start.

Toyota 4runner ran low on oil and now won't start

Throttle body position sensor (TPS), JUST locate the throttle body and you will see an electrical plug, RIGHT at the throttle butterfly, check if it's LOOSE or if there's anything WRONG with the WIRES, and go from there.
Normally, it will have like 4 wires, not sure about the color, but 1 is constant power, 1 is output signal, 1 is IDLE/Wide open throttle SIGNAL, and the LAST is ground.

Use a Voltmeter, hook the NEG-(black lead) to chassis or BATTERY NEGATIVE. The RED lead is probed into any wire to check for any voltage. ONLY perform this check when you have Ignition ON, means that you have power, but engine OFF. Do not take hours long you will drain the BATTERY.

Power wire will either be always 5V or 12V constant.
Ground will have ~0 Voltage.
OUTput signal wire will VARY as you work the throttle, start at 0.5 "ish" and 4.5V "ish at Wide open.
The idle switch signal should switch between maximum and minimum value as you work the throttle BACK and FORTH.

CHECK ONE AT A TIME.
IF NT working, look for a new part. IT's TOYOTA should not be EXPENSIVE.
FEEL FREE TO DESCRIBE what you find to me :).

1990 4runner not shifting properly when cold.

hello, first you need to make sure the engine gets to operating temperature, maybe the thermostat needs to be replaced, if after that it still has the same problem the temp sender could be the issue here. It is located on a housing in between the cylinder heads near the firewall where the heater hose connects. there are two temp sensors, one for the gauge on the dash and one for the computer.
The dash sensor has a single wire, the computer temp sensor has a connector with two wires and is a green connector.

A/T Oil Temp and check engin controls on.What can

to get some ideas of the cost first run the fault codes to determine the problem
doubt if it is an oil pump as you drove home
could be a pressure regulator passing excessive oil and heating it up, not enough coolant in the radiator and you have an over heating problem, excessive oil in the transmission

Maintenance light flashing

h) Engine Oil Replacement Reminder
Light (for vehicles sold in U.S.A.)
This light reminds you when to replace
the engine oil.
This light will come on when the ignition
key is turned to “ON” and will go off after
about a few seconds.
When you drive for about 8000 km (5000
miles) after the engine oil replacement,
this light illuminates for about 3 seconds
and then flashes for about 12 seconds
with the ignition key turned to “ON” position.
If you continue driving without the
engine oil replacement, and if the driving
range exceeds 12000 km (7500 miles), the
light will come on after the ignition key is
turned to “ON” position. The light will remain
on thereafter.
If the light is flashing, we recommend that
you replace the engine oil at an early
opportunity depending on the driving and
road condition. If the light comes on, replace
it as soon as possible.
You need to reset the light after the engine
oil replacement. Reset the light by
following the procedure below:
1. Turn the ignition key to the “OFF” position
with the odometer reading shown.
(For details, see “Odometer and two
trip meters” on page 136 in this Section.)
2. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position
while holding down the trip meter
reset button.
Hold down the button until the light goes
off. Before the light goes off, it illuminates
for 3 seconds, flashes for 2 seconds and
illuminates for 1 second.
If the system fails to reset, the light will
remain flashing.
