If you mean the thermal fuse, the set should have a red blink code of 5 blinks. The thermal fuse is way inside on the frame of the lamp housing but can be tested with rear cover removed.

If you have one bad the red blinking light will have to display some code.

it works!! First i took off the front panel. Just check your manual for instructions, very easy to do. If you do not have a manual just down load one from google.. The instruction are easy to follow. The screw they have you loosen with a alan wrench is attached to the plastic, so you do not have to worry about dropping it inside the tv. Removing the lamp was simple. once out you will notice on either side are two small mesh screens. One of mine was 80% blocked with dust, the other side was only 30-40% covered. I used a vacuum to remove the blockage, i did not want the dust and dirt to go inside the bulb. i then cleaned all around the lamp. Reinstalled, and we are go to go. The kids are happy and i am happier since my wife not be buying a new TV.
total cost of repair $.00
time required to fix, less than 15 minutes.

Also when my TV was loosing sound and picture and then return. I did turn off my TV, then turned on. I nothiced a red blinking light. Mine flashed 5 times. After some reserch, 5 times is video related, bulb or video board. google red flashing light with the model you have and you will find what all the codes mean.
So if yours is flashing 5 times try the above, it might work for you and it is well worth the time before you call a tech and drops hundreds of dollars.

hope this helps.

SOURCE: picture is dark

Adjust video settings:

  1. Press Wega Gate
  2. Select Settings
  3. Highlight Video
  4. Press + to select
  5. Adjust/increase the brightness.
  6. Press Wega gate to exit.
If picture is still dark, you need to replace the lamp again. Sony recommends that you replace the lamp:
  1. After approximately 8,000 hours of use.
  2. When the screen becomes dark or the color becomes unusual.
  3. When the lamp indicator on the front of the TV flashes.

SOURCE: whow to replace lamp on tv sony kdf-e60a20

Follow this procedure to replace the lamp:

1. Turn off the power on the main unit. Wait several minutes, then unplug
the power cord.
(The cooling fan will continue to operate for about two minutes after
turning the power off.)

2. Wait at least 30 minutes after unplugging the power cord to allow the
lamp to cool down before replacing it. To avoid being burned, do not
touch the lamp receptacle once the lamp has been removed.

3. Take the new lamp out of the box.
Do not touch the glass portion of the new lamp.

✍ Do not shake the lamp. Vibration can damage the lamp or shorten
its life.
✍ Avoid touching the front glass of a new lamp or the glass of the
lamp receptacle. This may reduce picture quality or lamp life.

4. Loosen the screws on the rear side panel.

5. Remove the front panel.

6. Pull out the lamp.
Loosen the right screw on the cover with a coin or similar object.

Remove the screw from the lamp cover. Pull down the cover toward you.

Unscrew the lamp and pull out the lamp horizontally.

✍ The lamp is very hot immediately after use. Never touch the glass
portion of the lamp or the surrounding parts.
✍ After it has cooled, place the used lamp into the empty box of the
replacement lamp. Never put the used lamp into a plastic bag.

7. Place the new lamp into its place, then tighten the screw.
Mount the new lamp securely. Failure to mount correctly may cause a
fire or the screen to go dark.

Push the cover back on. Make sure that the hole on the cover aligns with
the hole on the unit. Reattach the lamp cover by tightening the screw.

✍ If the lamp cover screw is inserted incorrectly, the lamp may not
operate properly. In such a case, remove the screw, insert it
correctly and then tighten the screw completely
✍ If the lamp cover is not reattached securely, the self-diagnostic
function may be triggered and the POWER indicator flashes three
times

8. Reattach the front panel securely.

9. Tightly screw the side panel in its place.

That is it. Thank you.

My sony 3LCD TV m/n KDF-E60A20 keeps turning off for about 30 seconds then on for about 1 or 2 minutes. we rerplaced the ballast. what could be wrong ?

It sounds like a defective themal cutoff sensor which is mounted near where the lamp housing slides in. They are well known to fail giving false thermal problems.. Other than that make sure fans are clean and vents are unabstructed. Or could possibly be a lamp. But I suspect the thermal cutoff sensor
Heres its part number 1-910-023-93 should be available at Vance Baldwin or other electronic distributors for about 6.00

The problem you have is a failed thermal sensor. Depending on how tech savvy you are you can replace it.They have changed the way the thermal sensor looks but it isnt too bad too put in. Any repair shop should also be able to do this for you.
