Question about Samsung PCN5425R 54" Rear Projection Television
I have a Samsung PCN5425R 54 in. Rear Proj. TV. My brother and I both purchases the same TV's back in 2003. About a year or so ago his screen started to become distorted and the picture appeared to curve horizontally across the screen and when we went into set-up menu we could see the various color lines in convergence and it would not allow us to align them up properly. Auto focus would not solve his problem either. He got rid of the TV before getting it fixed because he continued to watch it that was and eventually he heard a pop and smelled smoke. I felt I was fortunate because mine worked perfectly. That is until this morning. When I turned it on the picture was distorted the same way except it appears that when I go into convergence menu the blue looks like it is okay. All of the blue text and blue crosses are perfectly positioned and I can see red text that is across the screen like a wave it ripples across the screen. When I go into the red it looks so much worse and I cannot get the crosses to line up at all. Not even close. It looks as though by the amount of posts on this TV, this is a major problem with this unit. I am very good at electronics and have soldered parts before, I am hoping there is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to fizx it. I have been cursed over the last 6 months with a few major catastraphies in my family's life, We almost lost my wife to flesh eating bacteria this year as she underwent over 8 operations and skin graphs. Normally I would just call a repairman or buy a new TV but that is not an option at this time. I would greatly appreciate anyone's assistance in helping me figure out how to fix it. Where to get the proper parts, etc. I suppose I should also not turn it on anymore so that it doesnt damage anything else? Please Help. Thank You Jeff
This sounds as if one of your convergence IC's has shorted out. There should be 2 large black IC's on a heat sink, probably labeled STK392-040. There is a small fuse next to each IC that looks like a small resistor. The IC that controls red-red-half green is bad, leaving the blue where it should be. Replace that IC and its fuse and your picture should return to normal.

I guess I came to the wrong site for my TV problem. Based on what I have read I feel it needs that new numbered convergance board for $81 but hait to just speculate and purchase it. I was hoping an expert would help me resolve my issue. Guess my guaranteed $19.95 was just a waste of time and money.
