HP LaserJet 1020--Problem with error message when no apparent error

Out of nowhere, my HP LaserJet 1020 printer says that the printer cartridge is missing or the front hatch is open. Neither of these things is true--the cartridge is in place, the front door is closed. Yet, it won't work. It continuously states an error message. Any advice?

    I have the same issue with my printer, it out of the blue started giving this error msg: The HP laserjet 1020 has the front door open or the toner cartridge is missing. But neither one is true, i even got a new toner but still getting the same msg.

Did this just suddenly happen or was it after you replaced the toner cartridge or opened the door?
I have found that if the toner cartridge is not completly positioned into the printer, it can give this error.

Hello, I replaced the cartridge in my HP 1020, now nothing prints. It runs through, but nothing prints. I put back the old cartridge and nothing prints with that now also. No error message, all green...

there ara no chips on the cartridge
when you get no print you need to refill it

unplug, 10 seconds, plug in, turn on and insert the cartridge again. if this does not work it means therz a problem with the lid switch

Try reseating the ink cartridge and see if the cover door is firmly closed.

HP 1020 Error Message

Had the same problem. Changed cartridge. Still didn't work. I suggest taking out cartridge and examining inside of printer carefully. I found a piece of balloon and a hair tie (aargh!, my kids). Works now.
Just wanted to post this as one more thing to check before junking the printer or spending money on HP support.
