Hi there. I've seen this quite a few times. It might be a couple things, but it sounds like the board has gone bad. Have you done a few tests already, trying another video card, and another ram chip? That's what i would try at first. If you don't get anything from that basic testing, it could be a component that's gone bad on the board, or the bios that went corrupted/bad. Such board are usually just replaced. If you have access to a eeprom programmer, one could just remove (if it's socketed) the bios chip off the motherboard and reprogram it with the bin file meant for that board, that can be downloaded from compaq's website in the support section for that specific pc/motherboard. Else, the board could be replaced with a compatible board of the same format and technology, even if it's not from compaq it's good, as long as it physically fits in the case. Hope that helps a bit ! cheebster.

Yeah, the hard drive from the other one will work as well in the older one, that's not a problem at all. Compaq doesn't make any parts usually in those pc's, it's not proprietary in any way :)

Hi t0rn. Why did you rate me as not helpful ? I did my best to help you out sir, unless you can repair the motherboard at component-level there's nothing much you can do ! Thanks, cheebster.

Go to Control Panel, (top right View Small Icons). Then look for Power Options. On this page, you'll have the option to leave the monitor on. You should also check "Advanced Power Options". Don't be afraid of the word, "Advanced." It only means "customizeable"

If your mouse isn't waking your monitor, try the keyboard's space bar. I found it works better than the mouse at waking a sleeping computer

In case it is in warranty, so not try to repair it as it may void the warranty. It is better to take it to a service center. Moreover in this case, it seems to be fault with the screen, so your data would be safe.

Powers up but black screen

For that you need to refix RAM memory.
It is in back side of laptop.
check in back side you find 1 plate upon battery open it then refix RAM memory.
if still same issue then you have to reset bios settings for that open back cover of laptop then find motherbord pull CMOS cell from motherbord for 10 minutes so all settings goes to factory defaults.
Then check.
Let me know if you need more assistance.
Thanks.

My compaq cq50 screen goes to black for no reason

Does it come back if you move the mouse or hit the keyboard?

If so it could be set in a couple of places.

Right click on your desktop , go to Personalize > Screen saver and verify your settings there.

It may also be in power options , go to start > control panel > hardware and sound > power options . Select change when the computer sleeps and adjust the settings there.
