The clamp does not tighten down enough
SOURCE: cannot remove disk that covers screws to tighten my lock
The screws are located on the non locking side of the handle. To get the cover off most pop off by placing a small screwdriver behind the edge and gently prying. Paint/varnish will make this harder so you my have to take a razor and cut around it.

SOURCE: just had my kwikset dead bolt lock rekeyed. i put
Sounds like its binding. Loosen the screws that hold the 2 halfs together. Get the key to work smothly. snug the screws and try again. If ok then tighten the rest of the way.
SOURCE: Loose Kwikset Chelsea Deadbolt
I just had the same problem as samrpetrich with a loose kwikset deadbolt. Here's how I fixed it - on the inside of the door, take off the latch that flips the deadbolt in and out using a very small allen key. There is a round plate cover that is snapped on top of the inside deadbolt mechanism. If you look on the bottom aspect of this round plate you'll see where it snaps on; once I saw where to apply pressure it came off easily - taking off this plate exposed the two screws beneath that were loose. Once I tightened these, I snapped the plate cover back on, but the dead bolt latch back and everything is tight again. Hope this helps.
SOURCE: Kwikset SmartKey Error in Changing Key to Lock
Your out of luck this new design is terrible once it locks up and no keys turn it, the lock is done you will have to replace it use the traditional pin tumbler style kwikset and it can be rekeyed unlimited times by a locksmith with or without a key.
SOURCE: I have a front door
on the inside of the door look on the bottom of the lock cover. There should be a hole with a screw or allen head screw. Remove the screw and you can access the the rest of the lock.
