There is a metal bar on the space bar key that needs to be attached to the key board. It is really easy if you look at the keyboard you will notice at the ends of the empty space two metal loops one on either side. the metal ends of the key actually have to go through the loops for the space bar the be fully functional if the metal bar's ends are not through these to distribute the pressure of your finger only the middle of the key will work. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: took spacebar off to clean up a pop spill...metal bar NOT attatch

There might be a metal wire if it is missing, which snaps to the keyboard, you may need a new keyboard.
If you are unsure, you should probably thake it to your local computer repair shop.
Good Luck.

SOURCE: the enter key of my laptop sudden stopping working?

To find out if it is a hardware or software issue, try going into the BIOS (Shutdown laptop>Powerup laptop>Immediately after pressing the power button tap the F2 or Del keys).

Once in the BIOS see if you can navigate to change settings with the enter key. If you can then there is a problem with your accessibility options in windows or keyboard driver. If not then you will need to take your laptop into a service centre for them to replace your keyboard.

Thanks

SOURCE: Dell Inspiron 1545 space bar, ''n'' and ''b'' keys suddnly don't work

There isn't any "Known Issues" that I am aware of with that model. Try re-seating the keyboard cable, see if there is any difference:

If no difference, contact Dell if under warranty. If not new keyboards are about $20 on EBay

Why would the enter key on a new keyboard not be working ?

This is an irony that we only realize the value of anything when it gets destroyed, lost, or else. Similarly, the space bar key and the Enter key are the most important part of our computing experience. Especially, when you are a writer or content generator, you have to ensure that the enter key works properly. But, somehow because of several faults enter key abruptly stops working as it used to. If you are one of them who are dealing with the Enter key not working problem, then we can help.

Space Bar Not Working

Have you gone into the device manager and trying to update the driver? If that's not it, try uninstalling it and shut down and restart the computer? It will reload your driver for you. That's all that I can think of.

On my Toshiba Satellite Laptop I have opened and started the computer but can't get past the sign in window because my enter key and space bar won't respond. I can type letters but can not enter...

> hardware problem or software or keyboard?

Experiment #1: turn the computer off. Connect a USB keyboard. Turn the computer on. Use that keyboard to try the 'TAB' key (to move from field-to-field). If TAB works, then try using the SPACE or ENTER keys.

Experiment #2: turn the computer off. Turn the computer on, and look for the message:

PRESS <blah> to ENTER BIOS SETUP

When you see the message, press the <blah> key. On the BIOS SETUP menus, try the ENTER key to "select" a field, to prove that the ENTER key works fine.

Experiment #3: Turn the computer off. Disconnect the AC power. Remove the battery.
Remove the disk-drive. Take the original CD/DVD disk, and start to install Windows to the disk-drive. As you work through the installation screens, you'll need to press ENTER at least once,
if only to acknowledge that installation cannot proceed, because the disk-drive is not connected.
If the ENTER key works, it works.

Experiment #4: Like #3, but connect a different, empty, disk-drive, and reinstall Windows.
If it completes, then your "original" setup has a SOFTWARE problem.

Space bar is not working, all other keys are working fine.

if the keyboard is too old and if you have used it a lot, then ou have to replace the keyboard. The space bar alone had gone.

Space bar to where the current right margin is. Press "margin release" key once. Space bar to where you want right margin to be. Press "margin right" once. This should work.

Margins

Most electronic typewriters work the same way to change margin settings. You use the space bar to move to the desired location then press the right margin key. You should hear a beep. If you need to set it farther to the right of the current position, then use the space bar to move the carrier to the current position, once it stops moving then press margin release then space to the new position then press right margin key.
