Connect your SanDisk Sansa M230 to your computer again. Ignore the format message and go to My computer icon on your computer, right click on the drive (E:or F: or G: etc) representing your SanDisk Sansa M230, scroll to format allow it format from there.
If it still refuses to format, you can the reset the SanDisk Sansa M230and try again.
In case you don't know how to reset your SanDisk Sansa M230, read the info on the below link on how to reset your SanDisk Sansa M23;
Connect your player to the your computer using a usb cord. A screen should pop up asking you what you wish to do with your device, choose the program you would wish to put music on with: windows media player, rhapsody, etc. Go to the sync tab and drag music to your player
Try reflashing the firmware for your device you can find the latest firmware and flashing utilities from the SanDisk website. Make sure that you back your music up first because when you do this you are setting it back to factory settings.
plug it into your computer with the included usb cable, go into my computer and select sansa m230 and drag and drop music that you have on your computer onto the player. you can also sync your music if you use windows media player.
Format your Sansa through Windows Media Player (WMP). To do, connect Sansa, open WMP, and click the SYNC tab. On the newer version of WMP (and I think the older versions too), there is a little drop menu arrow right below SYNC tab. Click it and you will see your MP3 player on drop menu. Bring pointy thing to it WITHOUT clicking and another sub menu will pop up with option to format. Formatting the player will lose all your data but should reset it.
