The Toshiba Satellite 5205 series of Notebook PC, and the S505 series model; uses an AC adapter (Charger) that produces 15 Volts DC.

http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Toshiba,Satellite,5205,PS520U-31P1RV,Laptop,AC-Adapters.aspx

You will see AC adapters sold that show 15 to 24 Volts. (DC)

http://www.duracelldirect.com/toshiba_satellite-5205-s505_ac-adapters_laptop_ac-b20h.aspx

This is because the AC adapter (Charger) has PFC.
Power Factor Correction,

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Everything-You-Need-to-Know-About-Power-Supplies/181/2

Also I see it is just a two pin AC adapter plug, to laptop.
Center hole is Positive, outer metal cylindrical metal shell is Negative.

Go for 75 Watts or higher though, and not a 65 Watt model.

[ On the case of the AC adapter;
Input: 100 ~ 240 VAC 50-60Hz

Means it can use from 100 to 240 Volts AC, and either 50 or 60 Hertz.

Output: 15VDC 6A

Means 15 Volts DC at 6 Amp's. (Amperes)

Watch the outside dimension of the cylindrical part, and the center hole dimension. Outside cylinder may be correct, but center hole may be too small. Or vice-versa.

SOURCE: With a new motherboard installed, am still having problems with AC power cord and battery. I know battery is getting to end of it's life.Power cord will not power laptop by itself. Laptop will onl

Output of 19 Volts DC at 6.3 Amps is correct. (It isn't the Amperage you have to be concerned about so much. It is the Voltage. Voltage is correct)

Mounted on the motherboard of your laptop is a power correcting chipset.

This chipset senses when the laptop battery needs a trickle charge, or a full charge. It also senses when the laptop is to run straight off of the battery, or the AC adapter. (Charger)

With a Battery being at the end of it's 'Life Cycle', you may be overtaxing this chipset. Can't sense that the laptop needs to run straight off of the AC adapter. Tries to constantly charge the battery.

Replace the Battery.

Or the motherboard isn't worth poo-poo, and has a bad power correcting chipset.
(Don't care if the motherboard is new. Lemons are made)

Some examples of chipset's used in this mode, I am referring to;

Please, Where I find a HP G42-210BR Motherboard electronic schemmatics? My note not star the charge pump to battery charge. Thanks and regards.

You have already diagnosed the;

A) AC adapter (Charger)?

1) You have taken a multimeter, set the Function knob to DC Voltage, and tested the AC adapter to see if it is putting out 18.5 Volts? (DC)

2) You had an assistant gently wiggle the power cord to the charger, AND the power cable from the charger to the laptop?

Diagnosed to see if there is an intermittent reading due to broken wires?

B) Checked out the DC Power Jack that the AC adapter plugs into?
(DC IN)

{ It's a DC Power Harness. The jack has a cable with a connector on the end }

Jack is in good condition? Center Pin doesn't move, outer metal shell doesn't move?
DC Power jack solder connections are good, not cracked?

Then you are looking for the power sensor chipset. It is a power MOSFET,

This is one that is used in a LOT of laptops,

Replacement power cord for my h/p lasejet printer

If you just need a replacement power cord then you should be able to use any similar 'kettle' plug computer power lead from a system unit, monitor etc.If you actually need a replacement power supply including the power transformer block which converts the mains voltage to the DC voltages required by the printer, then you will need to look at on-line companies who provide such parts.See http://www.aliexpress.com/store/100504/202932004-359117582/Original-AC-Power-Adapter-Charger-for-HP-Deskjet-F380-All-in-One-printer-00086.html for one such company which also shows the power lead socket.

Charger tips to small for dell laptop

A Dell Mini net book is a small and very portable laptop. The compact size makes it a good candidate for travel or just simply using around the house. Outdoor aficionados can get the most computing life out of a Dell Mini by finding a way to charge the battery outside. One method works when you are near a building while the other can be used for more remote outdoor locales

Things You'll Need
  • Extension cord
  • Solar laptop charger
  • Dell Mini power adapter

    • 1 Plug an extension cord into an available power outlet. Run the extension cord to where you are outside. Many homes also have exterior outlets. Use an extension cord that is designed for outside use. Plug the Dell Mini power adapter into the extension cord to charge the battery.
    • 2 Purchase a laptop solar charger. Solar chargers are available from several different manufacturers and may come in the form of a roll or be built into a case that closes up for travel. Depending on the charger, you may also need to purchase a Dell Mini power adapter. Some chargers work with a Dell Mini cigarette lighter adapter that is designed to plug into a vehicle's power port.
    • 3 Place the solar laptop charger in a sunny location. Open up the case if the charger is in one and roll it out flat or unfold it to expose all of the solar cells.
    • 4 Connect the Dell Mini power adapter to the power port on the solar charger. Connect the other end to the netbook. The adapter will regulate the charge coming from the solar panel and recharge the battery in the Dell Mini.
  1. Tips & Warnings
  2. Solar chargers offer less power than a wall outlet. They can be used to extend the battery life of a Dell Mini or to recharge the battery when the netbook is off.
  3. Some solar laptop chargers are relatively heavy. Take the weight into consideration if you are going to be backpacking or otherwise carrying it on your person.

My Dell Latitude D160 won't respond at all. I have to constantly push the power on button to even get it to come on and when it does, the battery light is on red and I think it says low critical power...

I'm confused too... it sounds like the power adapter is not (electrically) connecting to the laptop or the adapter is not delivering proper voltage/amps to the laptop.

You shoud 1. make sure that the AC plug is properly in the AC socket, 2. that the AC cord is (mechanically) connected to the adapter, and 3. that the adapter is (mechanically) connected to the laptop.

I cannot tell you how many laptops I have seen where the (internal) power connector breaks as a result of (typically) mis-handling, dropping, etc. Try (gently) wiggling the adapter connector and look for the LED changing colors.

You could also test the voltage output of the adapter with a standard Volt meter...

I have Acer Aspire 3680-2022 notebook. I still have power instability after buying a new a/c adapter & new battery. When a/c plugged in, battery can randomly & rapidly drop...I get a lot of...

Hello.

The most common reasons for power issues are the battery, power jack and power adapter/cord.

Power off and remove the battery. If the laptop powers on with just the adapter connected, your battery is faulty.

If you move/wiggle the power adapter at the point where it connects to the laptop, and the power goes off and on, the power jack is the problem.

The power jack is inside the laptop and either needs soldering or replacement. If a power jack problem, it should be addressed by someone knowledgeable.

If no change, the power adapter is probably faulty and needs replacement.

Hope this helps.

The power adapter that plugs into the laptop HP DV4000 is broken, and I can't use the charger. where can I find a new one to replace the broken one, or will I have to buy a whold new charger? thanks

Do you mean only the power cable that linked the power brick with laptop was broken? Of course if you are 100% sure that's the only part that fail, you may only buy a cable. Check this link blow:
http://www.chargerbuy.com/cable-connector/power-cord.html

But if you are not that sure, i'll suggest you buying a whole new charger:

CanI use power rated 19volts instead of original power supply 18.5volts

As you have found... half a volt at that amerage should be just fine...

If it helps, I just bought an aftermarket replacement of the correct voltage and amperage for my nx9010 from eBay for $15AU delivered. It'd probably help when it comes time to sell your laptop =-]
