Does the error remain when you remove then restore power to the machine? Also reboot the PC.
It sounds like a remnant of the Status Monitor may be fouling the set up. I suggest you try removing the status monitor and the drivers etc again.
Once removed, reboot the PC and try to install the driver only. Reboot the PC and then download the latest version of the Status Monitor and install that. Reboot the whole lot again and see how you go.
Removing a remnant can be a real hastle and it is often better to re-install an application then remove it to try and recover the failed un-install.
If you still get no joy, try calling Epson. They can sometimes to be very willing to help with such things even when out of warranty.

Yes to both. Have downloaded and reinstalled driver from Epson to no avail. This was after trying to uninstall Espon monitor software. XP would not let me due to 'memory error' but the program seems to have gone anyway.I cannot find the original CD.
OK. Thankyou very much. I will keep you updated.
