Call company & insist on a FREE Recovery disk,it's covered by warranty. They'll try to sell you one, until you remind them it is unlawful to sell a new computer w/o a restore for an OS.I did it,it gets results, don't let techs push you around...

How do I enable a compaq laptop's keys

Compaq Presario computers provide users with a row of function keys for added keyboard functionality. Function keys can serve a dual purpose as well.
Function keys are located at the top of Compaq Presario keyboards.
By learning how function keys work on a Compaq Presario you can take advantage of time saving keyboard shortcuts.Purpose
Use function keys to access menus, save changes and create shortcut keys.
Various applications, including Microsoft Office, allow you to select a function key as a shortcut key for running specific tasks. These settings are usually found under the Tools, Settings or File menu.
Each Compaq Presario computer has twelve function keys.
The most common used keys are "F2," "F8," "F10" and "F12."
The first three are used mainly to access and use the Compaq BIOS. "F12" is used to access a set of run from options during the boot process.

How to Access
Access function keys on a Compaq Presario by pressing any of the keys on the top row of the keyboard. Access the key's dual purpose by first pressing the "Fn" key located on the bottom row of keys.
Use function keys as shortcut keys by pressing them anytime while in the desired application. Remember, you must set them as shortcut keys first.
Note that some programs may already have certain function keys set as shortcuts.
Open menus and view the shortcut keys beside each menu item before setting your own shortcuts.

Dual Uses Each function key has a dual use. Press "Fn" plus the desired function key for the key's other use.
Below each function number is a small picture within a square or rectangle.
This dictates the dual use. "F1" opens help and support. "F2" serves as a printer shortcut.
Open your homepage by pressing "F3."
If you use dual monitors, switch between monitors by using "F4." "F5" puts your computer in stand-by mode.
Quickly lock your computer by pressing "F6." "F7" and "F8" adjust the screen's contrast.
Play and pause your music in Windows Media Player or other default media player by using "F9."
Press "F10" to stop playing media. Skip ahead or rewind media by using "F11" and "F12."

Other "Fn" Keys

In addition to function keys, the "Fn" key is also provides other keys with a dual use.
Any key with a small square on the key has a dual purpose such as the "scroll," "insert" and "delete" buttons.
Since laptop keyboards have no number pads, certain keys serve as the number pad by pressing the "Fn" key.

Need to find list/definitions of "function Keys"

Please open this LINK, scroll down to page no. 2-5 i.e. the section with "To use the Function Hot Keys Fn". There you'll find the details about the functional function keys of your compaq. It seems your function key i.e. Fn key is activated, to deactivate, press and hold down the Fn key while you tap the Numlock key once.

Let me know if you need further help.
Good Luck.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Some letter Keys on my Keyboard are numbers why

You have enabled the NumLock function of your keyboard. Find the NumLck key on your keyboard. It is normally on the top row of keys or above the numbers keypad. Then press Fn (Function) and NumLck at the same time. That will toggle OFF the numLock setting. It may be different function key combination on the different computer manufacturer. Dell is usually Fn + F4, Compaq is Fn + ScrLK. Each manufacturer may use a different set of key

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response.

Thanks, Joe

How do I use the hot keys/ function keys

To use the hotkeys on the keyboard you usually need to load the software/drivers. Sometimes you need to download these if there was no disc.
The extra buttons on the mice can be set in different ways.
As with the keyboard, use software to map different functions to the keys, also in games you can just set them to a function/action if the keys are configurable

I want to get into the setup mode when booting, and the normal F2, F8, or F12 keys don't do anything. I want to boot from a cd....how do I achieve this?

its possible that the Function keys on the top of your keyboard aren't working.

Turn off the computer and disconnect the keyboard from the computer and then plug the keyboard back in.

If the keyboard function keys still aren't working then the keyboard needs to be replaced.

Just for your info, to boot up off the cd you would either go into the BIOS by pressing F10 or F11 on your keyboard and then change the boot sequence so that the CD Rom is the first boot device.

You can also press F12 to go into the boot menu and choose the cd-rom directly from there.
