If it takes and accepts the disc but will not play it is either a mechanical issue (table not spinning the disc) or if not reading disc it is likely a dirty or bad optical pickup in the unit---
Hello; There are many laws and rules controlling what you can watch on all DVD players, built into a TV or separate player. If you go buy an MGM or other dvd of some movie at Walmart , Best Buy ETC it should play in your DVD player, But if You or somebody " Burned a DVD" , It Likely won't play. If The DVD is an original store copy and still won't play, the DVD chassis must be replaced. BIG BUCKS. Just buy a Cheap DVD player and plug into the jacks on the back of the TV and save a TON of money. John
You probably will need to replace the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) in your laptop. Go to Google and search for "Dell Inspirion 6000 CD/DVD drive" to find a replacement. To be sure it's the CD/DVD drive that's defective and not your operating system software, you could also try to boot from a boot-able DVD disk.
The DVD read head may need to be cleaned. Sometimes perfectly OK drives also fail to read certain discs. If the problem is persistent, i.e. the notebook won't read any discs, then clean the head (with a head cleaner) and try again. If it starts working, fine.. If not, then you may have to replace the DVD drive. If the problem is only related to playing one particular DVD, then its the DVD that is faulty.
Hope this helps.
Check the type of the blank CD/DVD you are using. Certain players won't be able to play CD-RW for instance.
If that doesn't solve the problem you might try to slow down your burn speed for a better quality CD/DVD. Sometimes a faster burn speed will lower the quality and other devices can have trouble reading these.
Open "My Computer".
Click with the RIGHT mouse-button on the icon for the CD/DVD drive.
Choose 'Explore'.
If your DVD drive is working, some files/folders should be displayed.
Are you using the free 'VLC' software to play your DVD-movie?
If not, search for VLC online, download it, and use it to "play" the movie.
Hi asssuming the unit will play audio cd's back to back with no problems then it suggests the laser pickup has aged. depending on the original purchase price and age of the machine, repair cost may outweigh replacement cost
America is region 1, thats why it will not play. The best luck I have had with region free dvd players is the cheapest you can find will play almost anything but they dont last
should i assume that the drive work previouly with com dvd? my annlysis of this problem is that the dvdrom is not able to read the format the dvd is in. the format of the hard drive does not determine the ability to read or not read a dvd. that is the job of the optical disc.so dont worry about the format that is in.ok. the other aspect of the ability to read dvd is the software. windows media player and other that are of age has a inability to play some new format dvd. best bet install the newest version of power dvd put the disc and check should start automat pending setting you may need to go to my computer and double clickon the romdrive. let me know.
When you say it won?t read are you trying to play commercial DVD movies or read DVD data disks?
If you're trying to play movies then you need a couple of things the first being some type of player program. Real player works as does Windows media player but usually DVD drives come with a striped down version of PowerDVD or WinDVD.
If you in fact have a player installed and when a DVD is inserted in your drive it doesn't play it may not be configured to automatically play DVDs. Try opening your player program and trying to manually play your DVD.
Let us know if you have any success or if you need more assisted. If you do let us know what player program and operating system you have and any error messages that may appear.
