I have a 5yr old ge side by side that was unplugged for six months. Upon turning unit back on it now wont get cool in the fridge or the freezer wont work. The unit sounds to be operating fine.
Check the thermostat settings and then check to see if the fan is turning. It probably is not the compressor since it is only 5 years old. Does the compressor get warm? Let it run for several hours to give it a chance to get started back up well.

Maybe corrosion in the cold control. Could be a fan shutting down. When fresh food side is warming up , is fan running in freezer? My guess with the information given. A simple repair.
if turbo fans not running then the evaporators probably froze up and wont cool at all unplug and replace turbo fan and make sure u let the unit thaw completely i recommend atleast24 hours and turn back on and make sure turbo fan is running and u should be fine
Could be the defrost element. If it does not work and melt the ice off of the evaporator, icing will continue and serve as an insulator. Freezer and refrigerator temps will suffer.
If you unplug the unit and let it defrost for a day and plug back in it will work fine till it freezes up again.
I had the same problem. GE Man said that since the unit had been allowed to warm so much, we needed to empty it, unplug it, and totally leave it alone for 24 hours for any excess water to drain out. Then, we needed to plug it in and let it run with NO ITEMS INSIDE AND NO OPENING OF THE DOORS AT ALL for 48 hours. After that, we started using it again and it was Perfect!! I thought it was a lost cause, so this worked and didn't cost me a dime!!
you will most likely have to replace the main controller board.. I have had the problem come up before and the GE boards are known for going out..The board is located on the back right side of the refrigerator has a cover plate about 6" across and 8" high The most likely failure is the relay to turn on the compresser (it is a small bk box on the board) you can unplug it and open this panel plug it back in and tap the relay with the back side of a screwdriver and see if you hear the compressor running.. Let me know
Your defrost timer may be stuck! This device turns the compressor off and turns on a heater to defrost everything. The timer is located in the back of the refrigerator section on most units...usually near a vent. You may see a small shaft with a 'one way' end that looks like the business end of a drill bit about 1/4 inch in diameter. If possible, turn it (probably) clockwise about half a turn. That may fix it. Wait and see what happens. If the compressor starts...you're on the right track. If not, you'll need to replace it. There are usually a few screws that you'll need to take out to access the timer.
About the ice maker...are you sure you've taken all the packing material out of the unit? Have you plugged in the motor unit? Use care when going near these items. They are mechanical, sharp and you can get injured. See if your manual is available...or online.
