My DVD writer reads but does not write.

I am using ASUS DRW-1814BL DVD writer. When I insert
blank DVD disk (+-RW or +-R), it records 0 total space and 0 free space but when I insert a CD disk, blank or partly filled, it records its data correctly. It reads both DVD and CD correctly. What can be the problem how do I overcome it?

Maybe it's time to replace but try this last thing before opening the trash can lid:- Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete. Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers.

try reinstalling your operating system ( try format your cd or just repair it). The system will automatically detect the driver for your drive but if it was not listed in the bios try checking the cables attached to your drive.. or still if not.. the drive may be damaged.

Using Windows XP. Want to copy vidoe from Media

Is the drive you are using a DVD writer or only a DVD reader? The drive that writes to RW disks is labeled DVD/RW or DVD Recordable.
These are the only drive types that will read and write a DVD/RW disc.

My Samsung CDRW/DVD SM352F plays commercial DVDs but will not recognise an inserted DVD/RW for recording picture files and shows properties as O bytes used space and O bytes free space. What is wrong?

the drive you are using is called a combo drive
CDRW- means CD WRITER
DVD- means DVD READER

DVD WRITER is not included in this combo...

only cd could be read and also written
but is case of DVD , it could only be read..

thankyou,.

The above internal burner not picking up blanck dvd-r

strictly speaking this is the correct response from your writer, as the disk "is" blank. Your DVD burning software, Like cloneDVD or Nero, should recognise the "blank" and then allow you to burn your disk image. you need to check that your DVD/CD authoring software is installed correctly and updated for all the latest features.
