First thing I would think would cause this problem is a faulty power supply. Since it is shutting off very quick, I would think that there is a bad diode in the supply. The instant you put a load on it (i.e. turning it on)it quits. Sounds like you need to replace the supply or the unit which ever will be more cost effective for you. Depending on the model PS2 that you have, replacement power supplies are all over the internet.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Haha i understand your distress :) if your slim ps2 is not turning on, first check and make sure that all your wires and stuff are all plugged in to EVERYTHING. also, make sure your outlet works too. corroded electrical outlets wont work. Also, make sure your PS2 cooler is not blocked in any sort of way. if you need any more issues, just ask :) ~~RJ~~
how old is your PS2? the power button might be starting to go if its anything older then 3-5 yrs, when did you buy it and how often do you use it?
also
are you holding the button when you press it? if yes then thats the problem, it only needs a single press, otherwise it just turns itself off again after 1 second of holding it
The same problem occured to my slimline ps2. I opened it to find that the power switch inside had broken of. The only option is to get the switch soldiered back on or replace the tiny circuit board that has the switch.
