If the status light blinks orange when you press a button, the iPod shuffle buttons are
disabled. Press and hold Play/Pause (’) for about three seconds, until the status light
blinks green.

When I turn on my ipod shuffle & hit play it blinks green and orange several times and won't play

The Apple iPod shuffle is a digital music player that contains a single indicator light that relays information about the device's battery condition, computer connection and any errors the device is having. The indicator light is capable of blinking red, green or orange as well as displaying a steady red, green or orange light. The iPod Shuffle includes a Universal Serial Bus interface and buttons on the front of the device for controlling music files.

Blinking Orange A blinking orange light indicates the iPod Shuffle is receiving an update via iTunes to the device's internal components. The update could include a patch to repair an error the player encountered once before, an update to the player's file-saving software, or a combination of security, repair and software updates. Updates are free and automatically sent directly from Apple through iTunes to your iPod shuffle before a sync process starts. Disconnecting iPod Shuffle When the player's light is blinking orange, do not unplug the device from your computer's USB port this will stop the update process and possible corrupt the device's internal hard drive. Let the update process and sync process finish before clicking "Eject" within iTunes and removing the player. Disk Use Enabled If you use your iPod Shuffle as a flash drive and not as a music player, a blinking orange light means that the device is connected to your computer and ready to accept files. The "Disk Use" enabled setting is changeable within iTunes if you decide to use your iPod Shuffle for music storage instead of file storage. When set up as a flash drive, the iPod Shuffle is assigned a drive letter by your computer's operating system and the drive lets you "drag and drop" files to the device. b> Charging If your iPod shuffle's battery is completely depleted or low on charge, connect the player to your computer immediately for charging then leave it connected to receive any updates to the device's software and internal components. Its indicator light may or may not blink orange until after it is fully charged. If the battery is low on charge or completely depleted, you may receive an error stating that the iPod is corrupt or needs restoring, close the error message and let the device fully charge.

  1. Remove your iPod Shuffle from iTunes and also remove your shuffle from the USB dock.
  2. Turn off the iPod Shuffle by moving the off/on button to the left (when off you shouldn’t see green). Wait a couple of seconds and then turn the Shuffle back on by moving the off/on button to the right (you should see green again).

IPOD SHUFFLE NOT RECOGNIZED

I had the same problem where my shuffle just turned off as if it ran out of battery power, and when i tried to plug it in the computer it wouldnt recognise it or i would get an unknow device error. I tried many of the 5r as much as i could but didnt work. Then finally yesterday i tried something new. I pluged the ipod into the computer and left it pluged in to the usb port and i noticed that every time i would lift the ipod from the dock (not all the way) that the light would blink green one time. So what i did was i positioned the ipod back on the dock then lifted it until the green light blinked and i turned it on, and it works now, the battery is charged. However i havent tried to plug it back in the computer to see what happens but i can listen to my music now.

Cant get shuffle to work when not conected to pc

How long have you had the unit? If it's been a year and a half or 2 years your battery needs to be replaced. They loose their ability to retain a charge in that time frame, and when you test a good battery or a bad battery they will both read 3.6v as a tester does not put a load on the battery, meaning you have 3.6v when the unit is off but when it turns on (load) it drops to zero. You could also try resseting the unit, to do so follow these instructions. To reset iPod shuffle: Disconnect iPod shuffle from the computer (if connected). Move the switch on the back of iPod shuffle to the off position. Tip: When iPod shuffle is off, the green stripe by the switch is not visible. Wait 5 seconds. Move the switch on the back to the play in order or the shuffle position. The green stripe will be visible in either position. iPod shuffle is now reset. If after resetting iPod shuffle you are going to attach it to your computer, be sure to place the switch in the off position. If you were resetting as part of some troubleshooting steps, continue with those steps now. For general troubleshooting steps see the iPod shuffle troubleshooting and service FAQ. Green/orange flahing light on IPod and no music.

From Apple.com Support Website. If the front status light on your iPod shuffle blinks orange and green when you press any button, then your iPod shuffle is experiencing some type of error. Try these troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem. To troubleshoot the iPod shuffle error light: 1. Turn off your iPod shuffle 2. Wait a few seconds 3. Turn your iPod shuffle back on again If this does not resolve the problem: 1. Check to make sure there are songs on your iPod shuffle 2. Use iTunes to add songs to iPod shuffle and try again If your iPod shuffle continues to display a blinking orange and green light, use iPod Updater 2005-02-11 or later to restore iPod shuffle, and then add songs with iTunes. If your iPod shuffle still shows a blinking orange and green light after trying all of the above steps, your iPod shuffle may need service. Best of Luck.
